Chances for (Brown, UC Berkeley, John Hopkins, Rice, Dartmouth)

Hi everyone,

I am a junior in high school and trying to figure out my chances for college. I am not sure who to ask and as I was reading through this forum and I noticed that everyone here gives such amazing tips and advice. It would be great if you all can help me out!

GPA: 3.65 unweighted cummulative (Sophmore and Junior year)
4.05 weighted

SAT 1 Score: 2310 (750 M, 790 W, and 770 R).

SAT 2:
Math II: 800
Chinese: In Progress
US History: In Progress

Extracurriculars:
ASB Treasurer, 1 year of Varsity Cross Country, 1 year of Track, 200+ hrs of volunteer, various clubs

AP classes already taken:
AP world history, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP United States History, and AP Literature.

AP classes in progress:
AP Statistics, AP Biology

My top choice for schools is Brown, UC Berkeley, John Hopkins, Rice, and Dartmouth. I would love to get into an Ivy League but I know my chances are slim. I am not sure if I should just apply Early Decision and gamble at my choices are is it not even worth it with my stats?

Thank you so much everyone for your help! It is much appreciated.

3.65 is very low. It’s too low for these schools.

Unless he can pay fully for Berkeley and he’s OOS, then there’s a small argument that can be made.

My GPA and SAT are similar to yours, OP. Honestly I had to bite the bullet and lower my sights (I still fell in love with some lower ranked schools), and I think you’re eventually going to as well.

Edit: But, there’s no harm in ED. I’d suggest Cornell but I think I may place my ED there so :P. ED or EA will help, I mean, someone on this forum got in Notre Dame EA with a 3.65 (okay he was deferred first, but whatever). If you still want to, then believe.

More info would be helpful:

Are you a CA in-state resident?
What is your intended major?
What is your class rank or approximate decile?

Your EC’s are also a little thin for these very selective schools. Congrats on your excellent SAT scores and good luck!

yes, I’m a californian resident x)

They are all mid or high reaches. UC Berkely might be low reach because you are in state.

Brown - HIGH reach
Rice - mid reach
Johns Hopkins - high reach
Dartmouth - HIGH reach

But you may have better chances if you give us your ECs

hey there! I notice you’ve commented in various threads… x). My extracurriculars are already listed. Theyre a bit thin, 1 year of cross country (league champion team), 1 year of track, im my school’s ASB treasurer. 200+ hours of volunteer work. What are my chances to NYU and UCSD? thanks :))

For those 2, they should be matches. Also, find something that makes you unique, even if you yourself wouldn’t automatically think it is unique. But there’s bound to be something different about you. Then emphasize that.

When I started the college process a few months ago, even with my stats, I thought all hope was lost because I’d be a cliched smart girl from Long Island. Then I realized that there was something that had affected me all my life and had been “normal” to me, but was very unique compared to everyone else. I’ll be able to capitalize on that. You should do the same. :D

You are ridiculously awesome for replying. I’m thinking of writing my essay on how I’ve been performing magic since the 7th grade and how I can tie that into being an inventor and how its really made me a better and stronger person. I hope i can get into college, at this point I think only the colleges who advertise on TV (Heald, western career) will accept me =.=. I can’t do it…

Of course you’ll get in! And honestly, that sounds like a really creative essay. If you write it well (remember to have a teacher or other adult look it over and provide feedback and corrections) it will give you good chances. :)

Edit: I should have included these: I’ve been taking art and piano lessons outside of school for the past 7 years. I’ve had foreign language classes in 9th and 10th grade, and I’ve participated in multiple leadership conferences in Santa Barbara and the school UC San Francisco (CADA 4 day camp/conference, and the Do Something! Conference). My cross country team also won BVAL league champions when I was in it.
