Chances for BS

Hi all,

For some context, I’m an 8th grade (female) from the Bay Area applying to a few BS, and I just wanted to know my chances-- and yeah, I know this website doesn’t change anything in terms of actual admissions chances.

BASIC INFORMATION:

  • Asian-American (first gen)
  • Fluent in Mandarin and English
  • No financial aid
  • Attending public school
  • My school doesn’t offer a lot of advanced courses/extracurriculars/NHS or similar things

EXTRACURRICULARS:

  • I’ve been on a competitive swim team for 5 years now.
  • I’ve also done golf for 7 years, but it’s more of a hobby.
  • I’ve played piano for 6 years and got to grade 6 in the ABRSM program. I don’t play anymore, though.
  • Art for 8 years, proficient in all mediums; I’m also gonna include an art portfolio. Most of my volunteer work centers around this as well. I won a few distinction awards at school.
  • I’m on the service team at school, basically, we just do volunteer work locally and plan food drives etc… And as I mentioned before, a lot of my volunteer experience comes from art: teaching preschoolers art, organizing an art class for underprivileged students.
  • I take Mandarin outside of school: in the Stanford Chinese program, I’m currently in grade 10 (one grade below AP Chinese).
  • If it’s possible, I might include a writing portfolio, because it’s something I enjoy doing in my free time, I guess. I’m also the editor for the student-run literary journal at school.
  • I’m taking Classics courses on the Yale Open Course Catalog, and I’m learning Greek and Latin on my own, idek if that’s important at all though.
  • At school, I’m in the art club and business club, sometimes I volunteer as a library desk worker. We don’t really have club presidents though, it’s mostly just a teacher running it.

STATS:

  • Tbh, my grades were awful in 6th grade; I had mostly A’s, some B’s, and even one C. In 7th grade, I had all A’s except for one B in an advanced math class. So far in 8th grade, I have all A’s, but we’ll just have to see…
  • I take the only advanced course at our school, which is math.
  • I also just got my SSAT scores and…well…I mean, I got a 93 overall, but I got a 57 in math. I know. I’m definitely retaking in December.

So far…
9th-grade Algebra— 97%
English— 99% (converted from 1-4 scale)
Photography— 96%
Science— 93%
Spanish 2— 100.7%
History— 96%
P.E.— 100%

RECS:

  • I’ll start in November, but I guess they’ll be ok. My English teacher really likes me because I’m the only person in my class that actually tries, but idk about math.

SCHOOLS:
Phillips Exeter (REACH)
Deerfield (my dad knows someone there, and I really liked the atmosphere there, but I heard they were super athletic so…idk)
Loomis Chaffee
The Hill School
St. Paul’s
Cate
Webb
Stevenson

Feel free to leave me some more schools that are more “fits,” because I can already sense that rejection letter coming

Btw, sorry for any grammar mistakes or errors in general. I’m tired rnow.

THX~~

You might want to look at St. Andrew’s School in Delaware. They have a service program on campus that teaches swimming to kids with special needs. It is a wonderful school with a really great culture. I have a feeling you would really like it. Mercersburg has a strong swimming program and is worth looking at, too…

George has its own team and a USA swimming team on campus (and a beautiful pool.) It has a less traditional feel than most of the schools on your list, but if you would consider SAS and Mercersberg, you’re probably open to that. It’s not far from Hill, so easy to visit.

Peddie, btw, has a terrific swimming program if you are interested in a top notch competitive team.
