Chances for Columbia? (Am I aiming too high?)

I don't think I have a chance to get accepted to Columbia for engineering, and I need someone to confirm this (so I don't waste money on the application fee). Columbia seems like such a great school though.
Here's my scores:
SAT- math (690), reading (670), writing (690)
SAT II - US history (700), french (630), math II (no score yet), physics (no score yet)
GPA - 4.32 weighted, 3.94 unweighted

I would say your scores make you borderline but you still have a shot if you have something else going for you like a hook (URM, Legacy, etc), or a really amazing EC & essay. If your math ii or physics scores are 700/750+ I would suggest sending one of those in lieu of the French. Also keep in mind that the Ivy Leagues are competitive for every applicant and thus NOBODY even with a perfect SAT and GPA is really a “shoo-in”

That is just my opinion though and I am only a fellow applicant and not an admission officer though so take what you will from it…

I will say though that if this is your top choice/“dream school,” wouldn’t you rather apply and find out whether you’d be accepted/rejected rather than not apply and always wonder whether or not you could have made it?

That SAT score will hurt you. What’s your rank? It’s not a waste of money if you’re in the top 5% and you have some impressive ECs. Worth a shot.

I am ranked 9 of 538, so top 5%. I’m publicist of the french honor society and treasurer of another organization dedicated to community service.
@loveeducation, yea, this is my dream school. it’s in a great city. it’s got a great engineering program.
there’s no chance i got over 700 for my physics sat II, I was completely unprepared for it. math on the other hand, I may have 700+

Honestly I just don’t see it happening with your SAT scores. I mean it’s not that unheard of for someone under 2100 to get in but it’s definitely a long shot. Best of luck though!

I completely agree, I don’t think i have a shot. But, I can’t seem to part with the application. I’ve been mulling it over for about 3 weeks now, and I know I should give it up, but I’ve dreamed of this school for a while now

Well the best thing I think to do is to hope that you get in but expect to get rejected…because with a 6.8% admissions rate, very few people know for sure they are in.

It depends on so many factors, it’s nearly impossible to determine chances just by SAT scores. What are your other credentials? If it helps, I’m in Columbia Engineering right now, and my scores were… well… below average to say the least. :stuck_out_tongue: The extracurriculars, the essay and a couple of competitions were what got me in.

@al4000 I would apply. It sounds like you really want to go, and this is your one shot. Pay the $85 and have no regrets.
