Hey. I know that it is very hard to guess whether or not you will get into any school, its a lottery. I am a hispanic male with legacy at Duke (my dad went there). I have a 94.5 GPA (3.9-4.0) at one of the best high schools in NY, and I am captain of my soccer team. My biggest EC (and one of my only) is playing soccer, almost every day after school. My biggest weakness is my ACT score, which is a 30. I am taking it one more time, hoping for a 32. My question is, how do these things factor into my chances?

Is your soccer ability at Division I/ACC level and would you be interested in playing at Duke? If so, being a “recruited intercollegiate athlete” would be a substantial competitive plus. Legacy generally is far less helpful, since many alumni love Duke but do not provocatively and continuously assist the University (e.g., regional alumni programming and service, university governance, academic/intellectual contributions, financial support that is noteworthy, fund raising campaign participation, student career counseling and recruiting, reunion leadership, countless hours working with staff, faculty, deans, vice presidents and other senior administrators to enhance Duke, and so forth).

If you can improve your ACT and especially if you have the desire and ability to play soccer for Duke, you’ll have a solid chance. Good luck to you.
