Chances for Engineering Major

Hey, looking into a Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science Major. Anyone comment on my chances at good engineering schools or UC's? (I've lived in CA my whole life.) Looking into UCLA, Berkeley, Harvey Mudd, Cal Tech, MIT, any Ivy League, pretty much any highly prestigious school with a good Comp Sci or Mech Engineering.

UCB/UCLA: Slight Reach (Engineering)

Cal Tech, MIT, Stanford, and all the Ivies except Cornell are reaches or big reaches. Cornell is probably a Low Reach/High Match.

Take a look at Carnegie Mellon, which might be a match. Also, look at schools like Case Western Reserve and Rensselaer Polytech (RPI). Both are good engineering/tech schools and both would be matches. You also might want to consider schools like Purdue.

for computer science/engineering...carnegie mellon is not even close to being a match..it would be high reach...but for mech engineering..carnegie mellon would be a nice high match

I stand corrected.

Your SAT needs to go up 100-200 for ANY of the schools mentioned.

r u serious? with all those A's, AP Classes, and Extra Cirriculars, i need a 2200 - 2300 to get into UCLA or UC Berkeley? last year, Berkeley accepted 24% of its students, averaging a 4.16 GPA with a 1950 SAT score, and it is IMO the most competative of the UC's.

I think you look pretty good for UCLA and UCB. Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science is the most competitive school there, their engineering school is probably a match. The others--CalTech, MIT, Harvey Mudd--are reaches for EVERYBODY. Unfortunately your math grades will be disappointing for most of these schools. But you really never know. I assume you're a girl, which should help you in engineering admissions. You might want to try ED for the school you like best to get an extra little boost that might put you over the top.

Choose some good matches and safeties, send in your applications, and hope for the best. Good luck!

Since Fall 2004, UCLA Engineering freshman admits have had average SAT I scores in the low 1400s on the old test, which equates to the low-mid 2100s on the new test.

UCB visited my school and gave a presentation. the students who gave the presentation told me that the average UCB student accepted for the 06-07 year had a 4.17 gpa and a 1950-2050 SAT

your SAT score tells me that ur school is a bit, if not quite grade inflated...so those As really dont matter that much........and those APs might as well be easy courses..............
in my school, even some 3.2 non atheletes get into ivies becoz our average SAT is around 2120..

i might be wrong, but i dont think that my school is inflated. the only classes that i see that in is my sophmore english class and my junior year biology class. all the other classes, there have been few As, and especially in the AP classes, A's were extremely rare.

Think about some easier school to get into, but are very good engineering programs (ie. Big Ten schools)

Purdue, Illinois, Wisconsin, etc.

Chances are some of those schools will even give you some money.

How do your SATs break down? Did you do very well in math?

Remember, "Average SAT=xxxx" means that 50% of the people in there got BELOW that grade. So don't give up just because of that. If you got a 2100 on the SAT, I congratulate you, it's a great score. I'd say you have a decent shot at the UCs.

can anyone help me calculate my UC GPA? everytime i ask someone or do online research i get different info. all help appreciated...
