Chances for Engineering (not sure where else to apply also)

Hi, everybody :)

I was thinking about MIT or Stanford, and for sure UC Berkeley and UCLA, but I don't know where else to apply. Interested in math/science/engineering/technology.

Stats:

Asian Male, from CA, very good public school

Weighted GPA: about 4.6
Unweighted GPA: about 3.8-3.9
Most rigorous workload
Class of ~170, but school does not rank

SAT 1: 2360 (Math 800, CR 760, Writing 800)
ACT: 33
SAT 2: Math Level 2 800, Chemistry 790, Physics 770, Bio M 750
PSAT 230

AP Chemistry 5, AP Human Geography 5, AP Physics B 5, AP Calculus AB 5, AP English Language 5, AP Spanish Language 4, AP US History 4

AP Physics B, AP Calculus AB were self-studied

NMSF (presumably)

NHS

Chemistry Club President (10th, 11th, 12th grades): chemistry tutoring, chemistry presentations at local elementary schools, organizing ACS Chemistry Olympiad

ACS Chemistry Olympiad Highest Scorer in HS (10th, 11th)

Volunteer at hospital (weekly): i get to dispatch other volunteers on errands :)

Chess Club member, part of a team that won 2nd place in a Southern California tournament

Law internship (11th)

Paid environmental engineering internship (summer from 11th-12th) at Cal State Long Beach

Summer program in math olympiads and problem solving at Stanford (EPGY Program, summer from 9th-10th)

Math club member...took the AMC a couple of times, got mediocre scores (around 80 or 90)

Anybody take the time to chance me at MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, and UCLA?
Also does anyone have any suggestions for other colleges I might consider?

Thanks a lot!

MIT: REJECT
Stanford: REJECT
Berkeley: In
LA: In

His stat seems pretty good.. I don't think it will be reject by MIT and Stanford....

thanks for ur inputs Gaffe and rlaqhdus, anybody else have an opinion?

or suggestions for colleges i havent considered?

thx a lot

You could apply caltech.

You have a shot at MIT/Stanford, but you're in at Cal and LA.

Are there any problems in my EC's/Volunteer activities or anything i should leave out of my app?

Since you're in CA, maybe take a look at Harvey Mudd? Very engineering-ish LAC.

Berkeley: match
UCLA: match

You have a very good shot at Stanford, less so MIT.

thanks for the help u guys

Kyle, why a good shot at Stanford but not MIT? just curious

MIT has too many guy applicants so while their overall acceptance rate is higher, their acceptance rate for guys' is lower than Stanford's. Harvey Mudd would be a good option for you. Consider Carnegie Mellon as well.

Harvey Mudd sounds great except it's way too small for my tastes, and also way too close to home.

Carnegie Mellon is a private and the tuition is probably way higher than UC Berkeley (since i'm a California resident), so if I were choosing between CM and and Berkeley i'd probably go with Berkeley.

thanks for ur responses

MIT accepts a much lower percentage of males, in particular Asian males.

Could you a bit more specific?

I second Caltech, CMU, Harvey Mudd. Suggest RPI, Rice, Princeton, Cornell. What are you looking for in a college?

do u have any awards? Being an asian male from CA is going to hurt a lot

@mathwiz: maybe Electrical Engineering/Computer Science/Mechanical Engineering. engineering in general i guess.

I don't mind out of state but since Berkeleys already a good engineering college + its cheap for me, i think it's hard to find an even more appropriate college. I want to go to a medium/large school in a urban (or suburban i guess, as long as its near a city).
Caltech = too small, too close
CMU = Expensive, but I'll consider. Thanks.
Harvey Mudd = too small, too close
RPI = Also expensive, but I like that it's in NY
Princeton, Cornell = Ivy League: Can I get in? Is it necessarily good for engineering students?

IMO berkeley is already a great option for me because of its engineering strength and tuition but i just want to get more points of view from others.

@medicalmania17

:/ not really the best award is the ACS Chemistry Olympiad (highest scorer in HS) where i got a certificate and invited to some enchilada buffet/awards ceremony. and yeah asian male from CA :( but o well what can i do haha

ownagerisms: your ECs/awards aren't very geared toward math/science -- as in, you somewhat dapple in it (chemistry, mainly), but it doesn't seem impressive enough for MIT.

Princeton engineering is underrated, especially if your learning towards the computer science or other more sciencey aspects of engineering. Cornell engineering is pretty good too. On par or just below MIT.

UC Berkeley is ranked third in undergraduate engineering program...pretty impressive IMO...is there a good reason to pay for Cornell or an out of state? (Besides MIT because its obviously one of a kind)

Well, you have to account for the possibility you won't get into MIT. And even if you do, you might like Cornell better. But generally Ivys are generous in aid. I think a few are grant-only (I know Princeton is).

I envy you Californians with the UC system. I think your chances are good at even your reachy schools (being Stanford and MIT) UCB and UCLA are very solid choices, I expect you to get into both. I'd apply to Princeton, Cornell, and maybe Rice. As an ultra safety maybe a mid tier UC, just to be 100% sure. If you don't think you'll go to Cornell over UCB, cut Cornell out of your list because I don't see how an instater will be accepted to Cornell but not UCB in my opinion. But I'd apply to at least 7 schools to give myself options.
