Chances for English/Psych major?

Please chance me for Emory, Brown, Brandeis, UNC Chapel Hill, Oberlin, and URochester, especially if I have a chance at merit aid for any of the following except Brown (which doesn't give it). I'm only applying to colleges without merit aid if the tuition is under 40k (like UNC) or Ivy League (in which case my parents will help me so I can take only minimal loans) because I won't get much need-based but my parents have 3 kids and want to retire, but I want to be an English professor and don't want too much debt. If you can think of any colleges that offer merit aid for someone with my stats and are strong in English, or if you think I have a shot at anywhere else under 40k or Ivy. I'm also applying to the honors programs at Pitt and Indiana Bloomington, but my stats are fine there. Thank you so much!

Stats:

* SAT I (by section): V: 800, M: 700, W: 800
* SAT IIs: US History: 710, Literature: 760
* ACT: 29
* APs: European History (4), I took US History, English Language, and Psychology this year and am pretty sure these will be 4s or 5s because they were far easier for me than the European History exam, and next year will be taking Chemistry, Biology, Calc AB, English Literature, and Government.
* IBs: N/A
* GPA: 3.87 Unweighted
* Rank: 16/331
* Other stats (AMC/AIME/USAMO, PhO, ChO, etc): I won Foyle Young Poet of the Year (100 poems selected internationally/12,000 submitted), won student of the month (we only have these Junior year at my school), have had a few pieces published in TeenInk, attended the Iowa Young Writer's Workshop, and have won a schoolwide public speaking contest as well as placed second in a poetry oration competition at my school. Also National Merit Commended.

Subjective:

* ECs: Started a book club at my school (sort of evolved into a banned book club - I love it), am Co-editor in Chief for the school literary magazine, am Associate Editor and write two columns for the school newspaper, played varsity on the academic team, and volunteer at the women's shelter to help teach kids English and reading skills.
* Job/Work Experience: Haven't found many openings in this economy, but I'll be interning at a psychology professor's lab at the local university this summer. It isn't a paid internship, though.

reach for Brown, low reach for emory, UNC Chapel, and URochester. your SAT score is stellar (which makes me wonder about the relatively low ACT score? dont send that) and your GPA is pretty good. the ECs look solid too, not outstanding. the other schools you listed seem to be matches to me…write good essays and you’ll be fine :slight_smile:
chance me back if you have time? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/736548-chance-me-top-schools-ivies.html</a></p>

Don’t send your ACT score. Your SAT is much, much better. GPA looks pretty good, too. ECs are quite solid.

Emory: Low Reach
Brown: Reach
Brandeis: Low Reach
UNC Chapel Hill: Match
Oberlin: Low Reach
URochester: Match/Low Reach

I also think you’d be a great match at Kenyon. Their English department is fantastic!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/737246-chances-wellesley-ed-lacs.html</a></p>

Thank you. :slight_smile: I really liked Kenyon, but I just couldn’t handle the location - it didn’t feel like enough was happening on campus, and off campus was quite secluded.

Should I try studying for the Spanish SAT II this summer (I took AP Spanish Language this year but didn’t take the test because I’m not very good at speaking and had 3 others) and taking it in fall, or will the US 710 suffice?

The 710 should be fine. The Spanish SAT II has a really harsh curve, too, so you’re better off avoiding it if you can.

K, thanks. :)

I ended up with a 5 on US History and Psych but a 4 on English Language…I hope that doesn’t change chances too much. I was kind of unhappy about the 4 just because it’s English, but hopefully my other stats with writing/English make up for it.

wow… u really have great chances everywhere. obv brown is an ivy so harder to tell…
for usamo/pho/cho, how far did u make it? b/c that could drasitically change your options.

um, I don’t do usamo…are you on the right thread?
