Chances for Georgetown, maybe Harvard?

This is sick, I know, and I usually hate all this college freaking out crap, but I fell in love with Georgetown when I went to visit, and my parents are pushing me to apply to Harvard (typical Asian parents...)

So, what are my chances for those two schools? I'm probably also going to apply to UPenn, Boston College, maybe Duke and Yale. And by chances, I'm also asking whether which school I should apply to early. I know that both Harvard and Georgetown allow Early Action; is it possible to apply to both Early Action?

Asian-American (second generation) junior girl from New York City
- at a competitive high school (you need to take a test in 6th grade to get in)
- I plan to major in economics and political science (or history) and possibly go to law school. My ultimate goal is to work at a thinktank (RAND!) in Washington D.C.

SAT: 2390
PSAT: 232
SAT IIs: Writing (800), Chem (730), US History (790) - (taking Math IIC in October, and Korean in November)

Grades: A/A+ (4.0 on the GPA scale)

Courses: AP USHistory and Latin
Senior Year: Ap Econ, Constitutional Law, AP Calc, AP Chem, Ap Literature

Extra-Curriculars:
School Newspaper: Editor-in-Chief
Track Team: Co-Captain
Poverty Club: Co-President
Church Youth Group: President
Environmental Club: Secretary
Concert Choir: Soprano
Washington Seminar: prestigious club at my school where we meet gov't officials in Washington at an annual trip (we met john snow this year)
Model UN

Worked at the New York Academy of Medicine, volunteered at Korean Community Services. This summer, I'll have internships at the Queens District Attorney's office and the New York State Senator's office.

I think I'm strong across the board, but there's nothing that really stands out. I do, however, have good social skills, and I'm a nice person (if that counts for anything...lol)

I also haven't won any (real) awards. This is pure laziness on my part (I don't have any time to apply), but would that work against me during the college process? Should I start flipping out and apply to scholarships and such?

pretty good chances at georgetown
at H its a BIG crapshoot

yeah, that's what I figured. What about UPenn?

You are a phenomenal applicant. Outside of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, & MIT, someone with your statistics -- all A's & just abt perfect SAT -- has a very high probability of being accepted.

As far as those other five, you have a good chance, but nobody is a shoo-in at these schools. You are qualified for any school. The key for you is for you to make yourself stand out -- why are you better than the 50% of 2390's who will be rejected? You can show this through your essays, through accomplishments in your extracurriculars...But you do have great stats; you might just get in anyway. :)

you'll get into both, my korean cousin's cousins also went to hunter(where you go rightnow) and stuy and all three ended up going to harvard, yale, and georgetown respectively

Thanks. I'm going to see where I get in. I think I will apply to Georgetown early though. It's my dream school. If I get in, I can apply to all reach schools for regular admissions and pick and choose from the ones I get in to, based on financial aid packages.

Oh yeah. It is Hunter! What're your cousins' names? I might know them.

I should probably add that I'm really into journalism. I went to Yale Daily News Journalism program last year (small one week thing, no biggie) and going to this Jouralism camp this summer (it's free, you have to apply to get in). I wrote my us history term paper on the new york times, and my sweat and blood go into my school newspaper.

DO HARVARD EARLY

DO NOT WASTE YOUR EARLY APPLICATION ON GEORGETOWN. YOU WILL PROBABLY GET IN RD. You WONT, however, get in Harvard RD most likely, so use that EA boost and do Harvard. I don't care what you really want, you must maximize your chances and do this process logically. To maximize chances at ALL of your top schools, do Harvard Ea.

For journalism, Northwestern is the best, by the way.

Yeah, there's almost no way you would get rejected from Georgetown, not with that SAT score.

Just a note: If you're Korean, I wouldn't recommend taking the SAT II in that subject. It looks lazy.

My college counselor also suggested applying to Georgetown early because then it would be my safety. It just frees me up to apply to any school I want for regular decision.

btw, how does it look lazy to take the Korean SAT II? I've fulfilled all the SAT II requirements anyway.

If you know for certain that you want to go to Georgetown, then just apply there EA. However, if you'd like to get in somewhere higher up, apply early there. I'd say to definitely do the second option, cuz like I said, Georgetown is not so selective that it would reject a near-perfect SAT score.

If you've fulfilled the SAT II requirement, then why would you want to take Korean? Colleges take your three highest scores, and if you get an 800 in Korean, they would look at that, US History and either your Chem or Math IIC score, whichever one is higher. Then when they see that 800 in Korean, they'll wonder why you took an SAT II in your native language. Obviously you would probably be fluent if you grew up in that environment, the SAT score wouldn't show the adcom anything new.

The reason I would take Korean is because it leaves me an option to apply to the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown, or even the Huntsmen program at UPenn. You need to show proficiency in a foreign language to apply (and since Latin isn't really considered lol) taking the Korean SAT II would be useful.

Also, I am most definitely not fluent in Korean. I know enough to get by, yes, but I plan to "study" over the summer.

In case anyone cares...

My courses for senior year: AP Calc, AP Economics, AP Chemistry, AP Latin, AP Literature. Holy crap, I didn't realize I was taking all APs. I might also audit International Relations or Philosophy. (auditing is just taking the course and getting a pass/fail instead of a grade)

Ahh...a hunter girl

If Harvard is your dream, apply early. If you would be just about as happy going to Georgetown, apply eary there. Although it seems like you should get into Georgetown RD, colleges are extremely quirky. Since you go to a competitive high school, where you apply early will be very important, because many competitive colleges won't take more than a certain number of kids from one school.

Georgetown? Northwestern? What in hell? You can do better than that. Apply to Harvard, Yale, and the other Ivies.
