Chances for Good, but Not Elite Business Schools (Excellent student)

I'm doing this for a friend

3.8 GPA from a UC
History major
4 years of work experience
Good recommendations/essays
Female
GMAT: has not taken it yet. I'd estimate between a 600-630

She has no interest in Harvard, Wharton, etc. Does not want to go into finance, is interested in marketing. Is looking to get an MBA through a full time program.

UArizona
ASU
Colorado-Boulder
Indiana
Michigan State
Minnesota
Ohio State
Oregon
Penn State
Pepperdine
Rice
San Diego State
University of Texas
UC Irvine
USC
Washington
Wisconsin

What are her chances at these schools?

I am not familiar with all the listed schools. But her profile is on the low-end of the range for Wisconsin and Texas. You can easily check that by going to each school website.

If she is applying for Fall 09 or later, focus on GMAT now - prep the quant portion and retake the test if necessary. If her higher UG GPA is any indicator, she should get an equally competitive score which can open up more choices or improve scholarship chance at some of these schools.

Also, the schools you listed are all over places. Short list to a specific region in where your friend most likely wants to work post MBA.

I talked to her today and she said she would prefer to work on the West Coast, but will go to the best MBA program that she can get into. Which ones do you think she has a reasonable shot of getting into?

Depends heavily on what exactly her WE is and other details, advancement, leadership, etc.

Why doesn't she study and get into the 660-700 range and then apply to UCLA Anderson or UC Berkeley Haas? She should be given a lil leeway due to her 3.8 GPA but needs to do well on the math section to show "quant" skills and that she can handle that aspect of those 2 programs.

Is she staying in CA and what type of marketing and in what industry?

Sorry but this is the type of response I wasn't looking for. She's not going to school 660-700 on the GMAT...I know that for a fact.

I want to know what her chances are at these schools. She doesn't know what type of marketing she wants to get into and will go to the best school that she can get into.

Thanks

Well, maybe it's best to have an actual score in hand. And, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, it's all about work experience.

She is an administrative assistant for a fortune 500 company (top 250). She has had salary increases, bonuses, and has received more responsibilities as throughout her time at this company. Her current salary is the $42-43k. She doesn't enjoy the type of work that she is doing as it's not very intellectually stimulating. Her boss loves her, but refused to promote her to a higher level position because she didn't want her leaving her department (obviously a very selfish thing to do).

She will get great letters of recommendation from her co-workers/bosses (many whom are graduates of very prestigious colleges - Harvard, Yale, Berkeley, Stanford, Virginia, etc.)

Assuming that she gets between a 600-630 on the GMAT, can you estimate what her chances are at those schools using the reach/match/safety system?

So what are her chances of getting into some of these programs?

ttt for people that can answer.

IMO, her work experience is a killer. Based on the GMAT score estimate and her work experience, I think schools like Texas and USC would be a stretch, but who knows. I just don't see how she can spin that work experience into something very positive. However, one can make up for shortcomings in the final few months in a few ways:

GMAT Score - She really should shoot for a 700...this means study study study.

Essays - get a business school essay book to see how others got into top schools with essays. Others should read over her essays prior to submission.

Show interest in the school. Some schools don't care about this (ie Texas) but some care a lot (IMO, Wisconsin would be an example..if she applies there and really wants to get in, I'd recommend she visit UW).

Vector- thank you for the detailed response.

Would you say that she has a pretty good shot at getting into the following schools:
UArizona
ASU
Colorado-Boulder
Oregon
Pepperdine
San Diego State
UC Irvine

I know that Washington is her number 1 choice. How would rate her chances at these schools in terms of safety/match/reach. I'm asking for an estimate because I think she needs to narrow her list down to 5-7 schools.

Thanks

my 2 cents

Arizona - good shot
Arizona State - decent shot (should improve gmat, IMO)
Colorado - decent shot
Oregon - good shot
Pepperdine - good shot
San Diego State - good shot
UC Irvine - decent shot (although, should aim to improve gmat)
