Chances for Ivies/Elites; also looking for matches

Rising Senior
Location: Honolulu, HI
Ethnicity: **Asian and Pacific Islander
**School: **Really small private girls' school.
**GPA: **So far I've got just around a 3.8-3.9 unweighted.
**Rank:
Our school doesn't rank, but I'm pretty sure I'm 2/24. Yeah, really small school.
Tests: SAT: 2190 (W:800, R:730, M:660) - retaking. Planning on taking the US History, World History, Literature, and Japanese SATII's. Also going to take the ACT in June. Almost 100% sure I'm going to be NMSF.
Course load: I've taken the most rigorous classes available to me up until now, APs haven't been available to me before this year (and only one - APUSH). I've self-studied for AP World. Hoping for 5s in both. My senior APs will be AP US Gov, AP Chem, AP Japanese, and AP English Lit. Our school has a limit on how many APs you can take during Senior year. Usually it's three, but they make exceptions for certain students, and I'm one of them. I'm trying to get them to let me self-study AP Euro. Oh, we only have 7-8 APs offered. I've taking one dual enrollment course at a local university and plan to do 2-3 more before graduation.
Awards: Bausch and Lomb Science Award, my school's highest honor in Social Studies (the school honors the student "closest to perfection" in each subject. Normally, in core subjects the seniors get the award, but I got it this year as a Junior)

EC's:
Leadership: **Student Council President (9th and 11th), Student Council VP (10th), Corresponding Secretary for Serteens (11th), President of Serteens (12th), Secretary for National Honor Society (12th),
**Service:
Serteens club, Girl Scouts, assisting with a children's aikido class (throughout high school and eighth grade), multiple service projects with Serteens Club
**Other: **Aikido (A Japanese martial art - 7 years, will be 9 by graduation), Paddling (will be 3 years by graduation), Debate (will be 2 years by graduation), NHS (will be for 2 years), Intern with a state senator this year - possibly going on to becoming a paid intern next year

Other Info: I have no hooks. I'm positive I'll have outstanding teacher recs as long as my favorite teachers don't decide to quit. I'll have done National History Day at least twice (I made it to states twice). I've done a school year-long internship with an organization that brings in foreign exchange students from around the world and have also hosted a few times. Our school's Japan Wizards (a competition sponsored by the Japan-America Society of Hawaii that quizzes you on things like Japanese culture, language, government, etc.) team, of which I was captain, won one of four trips to Japan in Freshman year.

I'm looking at schools like Georgetown, Yale, Princeton, Brown, Middlebury, Amherst, Tufts, Swarthmore, UChicago etc. I may also be applying to the Air Force and Military Academies. I'd be grateful for any suggestions for matches - I know these are all reaches.

If it makes any difference, I'm planning on either going to law or graduate school immediately after my undergrad (unless I miraculously do get into an Academy and decide to go there) with the possibility of pursuing a doctorate.

Geographically, I really want to go to the East Coast, mid-Atlantic/New England area. It's not set in stone though.

And I think I'm going to be studying either history, Middle Eastern studies, or international relations. Possibly some combo.

Thanks!

Hmm… Personally I’m not applying to Ivies so I am not too positive about all of the specifics. However, I think its key to get the SAT scores up/do well on the SAT II scores to improve your chances.

You have decent EC’s. but I say try and build onto that. My cousin applied to an Ivy ( got into Upenn) and a key for those are standing out in some way. Whether it requires taking part in an internship, doing something major for your career, or help become in charge of some major organization in your community, etc…

Its important to stand out. Thousands of students are applying with striahgt A+'s and 2400 hundreds on their SAT’s and dont get in… You just need to find a way to stand out from the rest and you will be on your way.

What would you define as Elite by the way? Schools like BC, BU, Northwestern, etc? If so, continue what I said above by improving your profile and you will be on your way!

Chance me if you can: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1153954-chance-me-syracuse-bu-university-maryland-few-others.html

You’re Pacific Islander. That’s a big hook. Use it to your advantage and you might be pleasantly surprised :)

Not only is your ethnicity a big hook, but your ecs and course load are too! Stay consistant and push a bit higher on your scores and your east coast high tiers may not be entirely unnattainable ;). Luck!

You have a very good HOOK and you definitely have got big shot!
Try shining in your essays and you will definitely do well
Try getting your SAT Math score up and you are on your way!

Thank you so much! I never really saw being Pacific Islander as a hook before. Mostly because it’s usually lumped with Asian (“Asian/Pacific Islander”) on most forms.

Are there any schools I could be looking at that would be good match schools on the east coast? Preferably a school that offers Arabic courses - I know quite a few don’t.

I don’t know whether or not her ethnicity will truly be as much of an advantage as previous posters indicate, especially because it is lumped with being Asian.

You have a very strong profile. The 660 on math is what has me most worried. It wouldn’t be as big a deal had it been writing.

I think:
Yale: Reach
Princeton: Reach
Brown: Low Reach
UChicago: Mid-reach, but if you can write some poignant essays, you have a very solid shot.
Tufts: Mid-Match
Don’t really know as much about the other ones, but I’d reckon that you’d probably get into at least a handful of them.

Good luck!

It looks as if the Common App places them separately - would it still count as a hook?

I’m… pretty sure it’s a hook. For example, the ACT/PLAN ask not only if you’re Pacific Islander, but also which island you’re from!

all i would say is to raise your M+CR score. A 1390 is very good, but for ivies, I would say a 1400+ would make you a very good contender =D

Ivies also look for geographic diversity, and Hawaii would prob. be considered diverse. Good chances.
