Asian Male, NJ

At least for the Ivies, things aren’t looking the greatest. Your SAT scores are on the lower side; you need to do much better on the ACT if you want to stay more competitive in the pool. I have to be honest: your application is looking very boring and typical of an Asian American student.

Being Asian is difficult enough, especially since we’re an overrepresented minority and usually higher standards can be placed on us. I don’t get a story from your resume: I can’t even tell what your passions are. You unfortunately fit into the stereotypical Asian resume (orchestra, tennis, science/math clubs), regardless of whether that stereotype is true or not. Your EC’s are all over the place and not too many notable awards. At least with Princeton and Cornell, they’re probably going to be high reaches unfortunately.

@dkclub17 yea i didn’t expand too much on my ECs for confidentiality reasons, but for my research I have been working with my mentor at Columbia and am writing a paper, and I am at the state level for tennis (IDK if these mean anything). Also I am confident that I will get an 800 on M2 and ~800 for Chem (if that changes anything). Also just curious, what would you say would be good enough for the ACT?

Unlike @dkcub17 I do think that your SAT is competitive. It is equivalent to a 34 on the ACT and that won’t ever hold you back. If anything I would retake the SAT and try to bump the CR score. I think your GPA and rank are very good. But as said before being an over represented minority and living in new jersey will make things harder. I would try to invest a lot of time into EC’s that you really like so that you do have a obvious interest. I think there’s a good shot at all the schools you said except maybe Princeton.

Agreed with the suggestion above to try to increase the CR score above 700 - as it is now, I think the eye is drawn to the 680 since we naturally look for the things that aren’t perfect. However, I wouldn’t say it’s all that necessary; if you get rejected, it won’t be because of the difference between 680 and 710 or 34 and 35.

I wouldn’t say you have a good shot exactly, but you do have the same chances as any other qualified applicant; not great, but you should get into a couple assuming a strong essay.

Your SAT is fine. Now you have to distinguish yourself in the other areas, such as essays.

@Acez4Dayz I would probably aim for a 35 or 36 on the ACT. Also, @jarrett211 and @drewharrahill it’s not that his SAT score isn’t competitive.It would be better if he broke 2300+, especially since the 75th percentile of applicants, at Princeton in particular, have SAT scores of 2350+.

you guys do know the old SAT is no longer offered which is why OP is trying to take the ACT

@BucketsUCSC Ah that’s right…

OP, take the ACT if you want, but the 2250/35 ACT line is very thin.

Especially for asian applicant even that one bump is a big deal in his application, and he can’t do much else in the form of EC’s or his essay so I’d tell him to go for the ACT and try and get a 35

I would try the ACT. I found much more success on the ACT, it really is a preference. For some of the schools you lifted you will generally want the highest scores possible.

You seem to be somewhat competitive for half of the schools you listed.

@chancethisanon @bucketsucsc @usualhopeful how do I look for specifically Tufts, CMU, Cornell, JHU and Williams?

2250 is a pretty standard, above-the-threshhold score at all those scores.

Again, competitive at all those schools, but that’s all anyone can say without actually being your admissions counselor and having your essays in front of them.
