Chances for OOS ... Help/Advice is appreciated

Basic Info:
White Male from small town outside of Pittsburgh
Public School. Current Junior. (Don't know if it helps but my school rarely has people apply to top schools, everyone usually goes to University of Pitt).

Rankings:
I'm currently 3/190 but will probably graduate 2nd.
I have 4.1 but my school doesn't offer many AP Classes and Honors classes aren't waited much. I still take the hardest classes my school has to offer and I get all A's with the exception of English which is either a low A or very high B. My GPA will probably go up to a 4.2 senior year.

Classes:
Senior year I will be in:
AP Calc II ... My school actually had to create this class for me and 2 other students.
AP English
Physics II
French III
Accounting
Current Issues

SATs:
My big downfall. I have only taken them once and got 600's across the board with a 10 on the essay. I know I can do better than this and will be taking them at least 2 more times along with the Lit and Math II Subject Tests. I'm aiming for a 1900-2000 min.

Others:
I'm taking Calc I for college credits from University of Pitt and will do the same next year with Calc II. I also applied to the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Global Entrepreneurship this summer and am hoping I get accepted.

I'm involved in French Club, TFIM (student career exploration program and helped organize a career fair for my school -- first one we ever had), Guitar Club (Vice-Pres), school academic competition team, golf team, Boy Scouts, History Club, Junior Engineering Technical Society and I created a stock-market competition to be held at our school for about 15 high schools in the area. Senior year I will be in the NHS. I have also accumulated around 85 service hours.

I'm very confident in my essays and teacher recs.

Focus on the SATs. One more time will be good....probably a 3rd time won't raise your scores that much. Use the study guides and study questions and get lots of rest beforehand.

Rejected, if you don't raise your SAT scores.

How high of a score should I look at to be considered?

3rd time can raise ur scores. I went from 1840 to 1860 to 1940.

Around 2100+

UNC sucks They can't take more than 18% of out of state students!

Dandhsirishguy, if you think UNC sucks then don't waste your time in the UNC forum and find something more productive to do with your time.

Haha, yeah, alright... The only reason you're in UNC is because you are from NC. That's the only way you can get in... The state is so hickish; they don't wan't any oos'ers in!

DUKE!

I got in out-of-state. Clearly they don't want ANY OOSers. Good logic!

It's funny how people take rejection

Actually the reason why OOS is very hard is because by law, 80% of the students attending UNC must be in-state. (University of north carolina system rule for UNC-Chapel Hill)

dylbarlow: Nah, didn't apply, already got in Duke (Fuqua) for finance... UNC wasn't good enough for a safety...

You got into Duke? Really? Here's another post of yours:

"Hey, I'm a freshman. Please don't tell me I'm too young to think about college, like everyone else does. I'm incredibly ambitious, so that's why I'm posting this. Alright, I wan't to go to Kelley very badly when I graduate in 3 years from High School. I know that Kelley doubled their applicants just this year, so it's going to be hell by 2010. So does anyone have any sight of what it will be like in 2010?

I have a 3.4 GPA averaged for the semester, should be a 3.6, but my science teacher screwed me over with a 92.4, which is .6 from an A. That's my first semester averaged... Remember, I'm a freshman, and I go to a cut neck boarding school.

SO HOW HARD WILL IT BE TO GET ACCEPTED INTO KELLEY WHEN I APPLY IN 2010?????"

Nice try! Oh, and nice spelling of want (wan't?).

I have the distinct feeling you have no idea what you're talking about Dand since anyone who has been to a major city in NC (ie. Raleigh or Charlotte) knows that it's not hickish. Though I know it's a common misconception I had myself when I first moved here from NY.

Anyways, it's obvious you're just here to flame the forum so we're all probably better off ignoring your posts and going on with our discussion.

irishblues, you probably have a good shot at getting in though I agree with the others that you need to improve your SAT scores. As long as your classes show a rigorous interest in education though, your EC's and probably AP scores should work in your favor.

You'll hear this a thousand times and won't believe it, but UNC DOES consider the applicant holistically. That stock market game sounds very interesting; make sure you emphasize it.

With that said, you need to hit the books on your SAT. Don't worry, you can bring it up. Last year I raised my SAT (1990 new scale, 1290 old) 140 points (to 2130 new, 1400 old) by taking the June SAT and studying during May. Here was my strategy:
- Hit up ebay (best option if they have what you need) for Sparknotes' SAT workbooks for all three sections of the SAT (not the practice tests, but the ones with the strategy). These include every bit of information you'll need to know for the test. Also buy Kaplan's SAT practice test (only test) booklet and Collegeboard's official test.
- Make flashcards from the Sparknotes books of every term you'll need to know. This doesn't take as long as it seems... It probably only took me a 'laid back' hour. They make it really clear what information you can weed through and what you really need to know by their boldface.
- After studying the flashcards, take maybe two Kaplan full-length practice tests. These are harder than the official. Analyze what needs work. Focus on that.
- Then take two Collegeboard full-length practice tests. Have your mom set the microwave timer, or something, but keep yourself honest!

I know this sounds pretty intense, but if you spread it out across two, maybe three, weeks, then I promise it's not that bad. You also shouldn't expect to better your score if you do zero studying. That just doesn't make sense. Don't listen to anecdotes you hear of SAT miracles--work!

I'd also recommend that you specifically ask your guidance counsellor to tout the fact that they created the advanced class just for you, etc. etc. It seems like that would be an obvious thing to stress, but hey, everyone forgets sometimes. Make your guidance counsellor brag about you!

hahhahahahahahhahahahahaha

duke. HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

too bad WE OWNED THEM ON WEDNESDAY. fool.

Yeah, seriously. :]

Good job putting him in his place and nice info 19382.

Try taking the ACT also. Some people do alot better on that.
