Chances for Phillips Academy Andover

Hey, I am a sophomore from Mississippi. I am looking into gathering materials needed to apply at PAA. I was wondering if it’s even worth it considering my credentials.
-33 ACT
-4.0 GPA
-2nd in class
-5 on only AP exam taken so far
-In Vo-Tech engineering program
-Very limited extracurriculars(participation in several local honors societies and beta)
I know I am being held back by lack of extracurricular, but I hope that my ACT and geodiversity help.
Assuming I have a good interview, essays, and letters of recommendation, would I have a reasonable chance of being accepted?

You are not “being held by lack of extracurricular” Kids do all sorts things on their own without an obvious array of clubs to join etc. Your lack of ECs is by your own choice. That being said of course you have a chance. Since you are clearly aware of the value of your good test score and your “geodiversity” you seem to be versed in how it works.

Since you’re a sophomore, I would assume that you are applying for junior year. Do note that junior year is very difficult to enter, especially if you apply for FA. You might want to consider repeating a year.

thank for critique !

Well, Andover is need blind, so your ability to pay does not affect your admissions decision. If you are willing to repeat, you should chat with your AO about that. Sometimes PAA has been known to offer a spot if you are willing to repeat even if your application is for your current grade grade.

@momof3swimmers I think it’s worth pointing out that many schools that assert themselves as need-blind are more need-aware than one might think. It’s kind of smoke and mirrors. Schools are definitely aware of a family’s ability to pay when, for instance, both parents are doctors. Nevertheless, schools such as Andover with enormous endowments that even large universities would envy can afford to be more “need-blind” than others.

In this particular case, PA is probably going to be need-aware in a positive way, to increase the socioeconomic diversity of their class.
