I am interested in SHC, but I have a dilemma. My current SAT score is below their 1350 bar, so I am going to retake it for a final time in November, trying to improve it. The results should not arrive until ~November 20th, and the deadline for SHC and PSU is November 30th. I know that I would still be within the deadline by about 10 days, but I am hearing to apply as soon as possible.

My worry is that I don't want to send in my application w/ a below-par SAT score, have them evaluate it before the November score comes in (pretending for now that it's higher than 1350...pffft, lol), and reject me b/c of that. If they just wait until December to start actually reading applications and making decisions, then it wouldn't matter. I don't know if I should wait or send it quickly anyway.

I'm a current SHC student, so thought I'd give some feedback since this site helped me out a lot when I was in your positions (pass it on and all that jazz).

To whom that said that the deadline for PSU and SHC is Nov 30, that's not entirely true. I applied to SHC in February personally. However, that's like the first round cut, meaning that essentially you have better chances if you apply before Nov 30. Send in the PSU one EARLY... it took me three months to get my app through the system because College Board and PSU seemed to be fighting and they wouldn't take my SATs off my transcript.

Jaiii, you have good chances... don't want to say it's a sure thing, but you have solid chances.

thanks jpt...woud you happen to know if psu honors gives any preference to kids of alumni because no one i asked seems to know :\ its on the app but i wasnt sure (mom is got PhD at psu and dad did post doc there)

No, SHC doesn't give any preference to alumni children. I believe that the information that it asks on the application is entirely optional and is only for keeping stats about the incoming freshmen.

hmm no one..ill add another fact...on Penn State gpa scale i have a 4.0 and my guidance counselor just informed me that my gpa is 3.6 on our high school scale..our school gpa is wierd.

Take the essays seriously. I heard about 2 kids last year who had SATs in the mid 1500's (old test) and did not get in. My son had a 1480 but wrote great essays and probably had really good recommendations.

BTW, he is loving Schreyer. It's a great program; good luck!
