Chances for UCL?

Hi, I’m international student who attend American school.

So this year I applied to several UK schools with AP and SAT scores.

Fortunately I managed to get unconditional for Edinburgh and conditional for Durham (5 on BC). Both for Economics.

However, my first choice is UCL, which I also applied for Economics.

This is my stat:
World History 4
Calculus AB 4
Micro Economics 5
Macro Economics 5
Chinese 3
Chemistry 3

Currently taking (predicted score)
US History 5
Language and Composition 5
Calculus BC 5
Statistics (my teacher did not produce a predicted grade yet. I assume 4~5)

SAT:
2120 (620 780 720)
Chemistry 780
Maths 2c 770
World History 750

So, my questions are:

  1. UCL recently requested my school to produce predicted AP grades. Does this mean I am definitely going to get an offer if I get decent predicted grades?
  2. My statistic teacher is really strict that she may not give me a good predicted grade (maybe even a three). How will this influence my chances?
  3. Overall, do I have a good chance?

Most likely UCL will ask you for three 5s on the upcoming APs. That will be your conditional offer. If you fulfill it, you are definitely in.

  1. No, it means that there is no chance of getting in without them. Econ at UCL [requires](https://www.ucl.ac.uk/economics/undergraduate/prospective/standard-reqs/#usa) 5 APs, with at least 4 scores of 5 (specifically including Calc BC) and a fifth of a 4, all in [Group A](https://www.ucas.com/ucas/undergraduate/getting-started/entry-requirements/tariff/tariff-tables/966) subjects . So far you have 5*,4,4. They want to know if your teachers think that you will get at least 3 more 5s, including Calc BC, in this year’s exams.

  2. They won’t care about stats- it’s a Group B subject

  3. Touch and go on the APs- they specify Group A subjects so they could say your Econs don’t count, but on the other hand they are obviously germane to the course (interestingly, the UK unis don’t tend to like the Econ APs- I have heard that from a couple of unis). So, with the predictions, you are in with a chance, but after that your PS and your Rec will be what makes the difference- and obviously I have no way to know what they are like!

*You probably think that you have 2 5’s already, but Econ only counts as 1/2 an AP (same as stats, btw), so Macro + Micro = 1 AP.

Thanks for the detailed reply. It really helped.

However, since I managed to do pretty good for SAT1 and SAT2, can I possibly get exempted from one of the 5s I have to achieve? So basically, are there any chances that I might get an offer for 554 or even 55?

555 seems quite challenging…

I highly doubt UCL will settle for less, especially for Economics. My daughter is in the same boat with you with high sat 2s, and her offer is 5 5 5

Ah, I guess I am also very likely to get the same offer.

Well as long as I’m not rejected I’m more than honored. Hopefully I do not have to worry about rejection right now…

Absolutely no chance if you don’t meet the minimum requirements. Sorry. 5,5,5 is tough, but do-able- makes for a very stressful May-July, esp as in the US all your pals are done.

(some UK unis will take SAT 2s- UCL just isn’t one of them) (also Calc BC is just a lot more than the Math level 2, and econ is a very mathy subject)

I will be sending good vibes your way  Everything will work out for the best, regardless. Maybe you kids will see each other in Edinburgh, as she has an unconditional from them as well.

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate it…It’s been very very helpful. I’ll hope for the best from now I guess

I took SAT Math II and I also take A level maths and further maths.

From my experience I would say the math II covered some of the content from further maths but it didn’t cover all the maths a level syllabus.

In terms of difficulty it was the equivalent of AS maths which is basically grade 11 in the UK.

If you want examples of the maths UK students do let me know. The format is very different. No multiple choice questions! :frowning:
