Chances/Forming a realistic college list

1 atm is Georgetown: SFS (School of Foreign Service), I want to study international relations and get a minor in US History

Dartmouth: Gov’t Studies with a Public Policy Minor at Rocky. Just visited and considering ED but not sure atm (thoughts?)
UVA: Foreign Studies or Political Science
Brown: Political Science
GWU: IR
American: Their CLEG Major Program
SUNY Geneseo: Political Science or History
SUNY Albany: Political Science or History
William and Mary: Political Science
Syracuse: Political Science
UChicago: Political Science or History
Yale: History or Political Science
Tulane: International Relations
Any schools that I’m missing or should look at?

STATS
GPA: 98/100
SAT: 1440: 700 R&W 740 Math (yeah I get it’s a little on the lower side} retaking so hopefully closer to a 1480. Also ACT looks like it’ll be between a 33 and 35 based on practice tests
SAT II: Biology E freshman year (770), US(780) and, World History(760)
APs: World History (4) (5) {I retook it, I know it’s sort of stubborn) Self-studied Comparative Government (4) Psychology (4) US History (5) Biology (4) So 5’s where it matters to me
Senior Year Course Load: AP European History, SUPA (Syracuse University Project advance; college course with more limited credit opportunities) Sociology, SUPA Economics, AP Calculus BC, SUPA Public Affairs, AP Latin, our Chorale (Tenor 2’s baby!), Advanced Journalism, Facing Genocide (fun class which I’m only taking since it’s the last social studies class offered by my school I haven’t taken and none of the other AP classes would fit my schedule)
Just for a look at the rigor. That schedule is about as rigorous of a course load for anyone interested in social studies at my school. I declined to take AP Physics since AP Euro is offered only as an elective and I’d prefer to take all my AP Histories. Side note: Is that a good idea? I still have times to change it and I already have my usual 4 years of science complete.
Awards: Maureen O’Donnell Award (4 Summa Cum Laude’s in a row on the National Latin Exam) Only among 200 people in the world. Honorable Mentions at MUNUC (UChicago), BUSUN (Brown), CNYMUN (Syracuse University) AP Scholar with Distinction

Subjective

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Multiplex Politics. A political debate club which tries to detox the toxic nature of politics and just focus on the issues We’ve organized voter registration drives and held a mock debate during 2016 (co-founder and current President) International Education Club Junior Classical League (Consul aka President) SHS International Thespian Society Model United Nations (Club VP and Director of Crises {a crazier form of MUN} for our conference we run, CNYMUN, two years running) Mock Trial (Witness on our trial team, 3rd in the state this year and State Champions 2 years ago) Student Council (Site-base team representative: pretty much I run town halls for the school every month) School Newspaper (Opinions Editor and Columnist) YMCA Leaders program member High School Ambassadors ‘Link Leader’ Some promotional work for a few campaigns Local town Republicans member Fall Play (Our Town:Howie Newsome, Hamlet: Guildenstern) Women’s History Month Assembly (Main planner)

Job/Work Experience: Tutoring Latin to middle schoolers. Camp Counselor at a YMCA camp. On-and-off volunteer at our local public library since 6th grade. Brief stint as a mascot for a Credit Union school outreach program. Summer Intern at Congressional Leadership Fund SuperPAC and at highly competitive Congressional Campaign ranked 2nd in the nation for calls and doors :)))))

Volunteer/Community service: Helped organize a couple of voter registration drives in my area (BOE said I got the most they’ve ever seen in one drive) Volunteer through YMCA Leaders program about 10 hours a month. Tutor struggling Latin students in the middle school. Volunteer at Public Library

Summer Activities: Worked as a summer camp counselor the past summer at a camp I’ve gone to since I was 8 years old. This summer, I’m going on a road trip across the continental US. Hopefully increasing my awareness of the various issues faced by those in our country. Working as an intern at the SuperPAC and the campaign office, both with very good letters of Rec I’ll be receiving. Just recently launched a website for my friend and I which is pretty much our commentary on American Politics: more of a passion project than anything.

Essays: Current Draft is about said cross country trip and how it’s allowed me to grow closer to nature but also experience our nation, preparing me for a lifetime devotion to public service.
Teacher Recommendation: My MUN coach, Psychology and Econ teacher, and politics club advisor. I spend almost everyday after school with him debating policy. He’s gotten progressively liberal since 2016, and I’ve grown more classically liberal (read: libertarian) 10/10 (I forecast)
My student council advisor and APUSH teacher. Had a rough start to the year but have earned each other’s respects and wants to help me convey my opinions in the most constructive outlet. 8/10
Counselor Rec: We’ve been fast friends since she started this school year; so I’m expecting great things.
Additional Rec: I have a lot of people I could ask. Probably something through the internships or my YMCA Advisor
Interview: Ready to ace them!

Applying for Financial Aid?: Hell yeah
State (if domestic applicant): New York
School Type: public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Just got into the $100,000 bracket!
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Family friend happens to be prominent Dartmouth alumnus, we occasionally chat. The Georgetown interview guy in my area happens to be business partners with one of my campaign bosses.

So thoughts? My scores will prop themselves up and I personally think I have great EC’s. I’d like to know if there are any other schools that should be on my radar or if there’s anything I can do to look better for these schools listed.

I strongly suggest visiting your “matches” to see which ones you truly prefer. You will get a much better feel when you find the one you want.

Georgetown and UVA seem like matches, but only on the early applications. I know people who are applying to Chicago and Yale with better numbers, but for STEM fields.

Good luck to you.

If you like Dartmouth, consider Colgate. Certain NESCACS, such as Amherst, Bowdoin, Bates and Trinity, would be excellent for the study of government and history generally. I’d particularly recommend Hamilton for its public policy major and available D.C. term. Though a few of these suggestions would be reaches, most would be appropriate for you based on objective factors.

So would that mean if I were to give up Georgetown EA in order to apply Dartmouth ED, I’d be effectively screwed when it came to regular admissions?

Georgetown EA supposedly does not grant any “bump” for admission chances, so you would not be giving up anything to apply RD rather than EA to Georgetown. Obviously, applying ED to Dartmouth precludes applying to Georgetown if you are admitted, so as long as you are comfortable with Dartmouth as your first choice, you don’t lose anything.

Congrats on the success in school. Good work.

You are competitive it not a lock imho. I know of two students directly with 4.0uw and 1500+ with leadership ecs 13 aps etc that were deferred ea and wl rd this year. It’s not a negative on you. You could get in as well. It’s holistic. Just a reality check that would have been helpful last year.

apply to georgetown ea

@SirStencil While your qualifications are very good, you have many exceptionally competitive colleges on your list, and colleges that are renowned for rejecting students with stellar grades and scores. It will be what makes you unique that makes the difference, so try to emphasize to colleges why you view yourself as an excellent fit.

Alright thanks guys! I’ll keep this all in mind when narrowing down my early applications!
