Chances? NYU, U Chicago, Case Western, Rochester

I'm an Asian American in Ohio. I go to a silver medal school (according to US News and World Reports), and I'm graduating high school in three years. I have taken a fairly rigorous schedule, with two AP classes (English and Biology) my second year and two AP classes (Government and Calculus) this year (third and final). I generally get A's, but I got a B in AP English and Physics. A in Chemistry and Bio, and I think I got an A in AP Bio, but it might have been a B.

Here are my current scores, though I am set to re-take the ACT this next Saturday.
SAT - 1920 (w/ Writing), 1290 (w/o Writing)
English - 570
Math - 720
Writing - 630

ACT - 29 (Both Times)
Math - 35, 33
Science - 30, 27
Reading - 22, 23
English - 27, 31

I'm aiming at Pre-Med. Either going to major in Chemistry or Biology. I'm fairly good at Math, so I think if I prep enough and feel good that day (had a cold on the second test), then I should be able to focus more and do a better job. Hopefully I can raise it to a 31.

I'm also in the top 10% of my class at the moment, participate in band and track year round, along with four officer positions in clubs this year, and two to four other clubs where I'm just a member. Not a member of National Honor Society, but I have received a few recognitions into Who's Who and NSHSS. EDIT: My current GPA is a 3.9 or 4.0 on a 4.33 scale. I think that's a 3.6 on a 4.0 scale.

Right now, I'm looking at (in no particular order):
NEOUCOM (6-year med program)
U Toledo
U Chicago
New York U
Case Western Reserve
U of Rochester
Rochester IT

And, if you wouldn't mind these possible "better" schools that I might apply to:
Carnegie-Mellon U (depending on my ACT Score)
Cornell U
Brown U
Emory U
U of Penn
Stanford U
Duke U
MIT

(Yeah, I really like Ivy leagues but I really am doubting myself on it all. Largely because of my ACT scores.)

First and foremost, pre-med is one of the most challenging tracks and to be completely honest, your grades and SAT or good but shy of what a pre-med student needs in the eyes of admissions. (You have not taken any SATII tests yet, but you will need to take either Bio or Chem and Math if you are going to major in Chemistry and Biology.)

I have seen many students get into NYU with worse but you have minimal EC’s in your area of interest. If you can work on that as well as an AMAZING essay it will help. For the essay make sure you show as much personality as possible; make it very personal, use vivid language, add a little comedy, and make sure the intro is super enticing. The essay is not a run-of-the-mill SAT one. It has to show why, despite the fact that your grades/SAT may be lower than others, you are still better than them.

Thank you very much for the advice! I was actually planning on taking the Math II SAT Subject test. I haven’t decided on Chemistry or Biology for a second test, but I think I may end up taking both to see how they compare.

I’ve also tried to volunteer at the hospital, but I have yet to get a response back from them. Any suggestions on what else I can do that would give me a leg-up on the rest as far as that goes?

your gpa’s okay but your test scores arent so goodd… and i think you should take the IIs

NEOUCOM (6-year med program) - dont know
U Toledo - dont know
U Chicago - low reach
New York U - very very slightly high match
Case Western Reserve - slightly high match
U of Rochester - match
Rochester IT - slightly high match

Carnegie-Mellon U - high match
Cornell U - slight reach
Brown U - slight reach
Emory U - slight reach
U of Penn - reach
Stanford U - reach
Duke U - reach
MIT - high reach (well for everyone)

you can chance me too! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/792948-chance-me-priority-nyu.html

I really don’t get why UChicago isn’t ranked as a “better” school…

all total, with a 3.6 gpa, 1920 SAT, and 29 ACT… high reach for all ivies and stanford and mit, i guess. nyu…high match. uchicago…high match. case western match. idk the others sorry =(

Considering it much more so than the others. I guess my “better” schools are more reach, depending on how I do after this quarter, after re-taking the ACT, etc.

EDIT: Also, thanks again for the responses thus far. Appreciate it.

The “better” schools you are applying to are going to difficult to get into. I would DEFINETELY suggest getting a better sat score above at least 2000 if you are aplying. You have a good chance of going to U of Chicago , I know somoe pretty stupid ppl apllying there.

I agree with Junie, but think you have a good chance at U of Chicago. I wish you the best of luck though!

NEOUCOM (6-year med program) - dont know
U Toledo - Don’t Know
U Chicago - Mid Reach
New York U - High Match
Case Western Reserve - High Match

Cornell U - High Reach
Brown U - High Reach
Emory U - Mid Reach
U of Penn - High Reach
Stanford U - High Reach
Duke U - High Reach
MIT - High Reach

For UChicago, make sure you write super duper good essays. Think wayyy outside of the box. I think UChicago takes their essays the most seriously out of any schools you have listed.

U Toledo - not sure
U Chicago - match/reach (because of your gpa)
New York U - match
Case Western Reserve - not sure
U of Rochester - not sure
Rochester IT - not sure

Carnegie-Mellon U (depending on my ACT Score) - reach
Cornell U - reach

U of Penn - reach
Stanford U - reach
Duke U - reach
MIT - reach

Who’s Who and NSHSS just mean that you have money to pay.
i think NYU would be a good match

Isn’t that only National Merit?

Thanks for the opinions so far. Really appreciate them. (Now I am feeling a bit more encouraged about NYU and UChicago.)

Carnegie-Mellon U-give it a shot, reach
Cornell U-reach
Brown U-big reach
Emory U unsure
U of Penn-reach
Stanford U-big reach
Duke U-reach

thanks for chacning me

Chicago is a “better” or at the very least equal to schools such as Cornell, Duke, Penn, and Emory.
