Chances of another OOS tuition increase in the coming years

So I’m considering UMNTC for undergrad studies next year but I was just wondering what the chances were that OOS students would see another tuition increase while I am still there (next 4 years). Also, I was wondering if this last increase was expected or unexpected for the students currently enrolled. Please let me know if you guys have any information! Thanks.

Current policy has been to increase tuition for incoming new, non-resident freshman 10-15% each year, and up to 5.5% for returning OOS students. State funding, inflation and decreased OOS enrollments could cause these numbers to go higher or lower.

@katrina1 the first article you linked to is current but the link in post #3 on this tread is from last year (December 2017). The first article also mentions that the regents are considering a $1000 per semester ($2000 annual) surcharge on all students in CSE and also for science/math majors outside of CSE. The current proposal is that this gets instituted for students that start in Fall 2019 and forward (no current students would pay). They vote on that proposal in February. That’s a pretty significant increase.

Definitely something to keep an eye on and assume for now that it will be passed. Over the last few years, there have generally only been a couple token votes against tuition increases.

UIUC has a similar surcharge of $2500 per semester, for comparison.

Final comment in that article was this “Our mission is to educate Minnesota students. We do not have a mission to educate non-Minnesota students,” Hsu said. “If you’re an Illinois students and if money is a concern for you, you should be going to the University of Illinois.”

Slap in current and future OOS UMN students’ face.
