Chances of getting in

Hi, I am a junior and was wondering if I had a chance of getting into middlebury

I am Chinese, adopted at 9 months by my single white mother

I have a 4.6 weighted GPA (3.9 UW) as of last year and was ranked 6/157 in my class but I did not take any AP courses this year because my mom was disagnosed with a possibly cancerous mass in the late summer and I thought I would need to help her (turns out, she’s fine)

I have mostly A+ in all my classes this year except English and am only taking honors Spanish 4 which will probably bring my GPA this year to about 4.1 and my cumulative to 4.3 or so

I took AP bio and AP environmental last year along with other honors

I got a 2090 on the SATS and a 1430 out of 1520 on the newest PSAT and my guidance counselor says I might qualify for the national merit scholarship

I plan to take the bio subject SAT again because I only got a 670 the first time along with the math 2 and maybe Spanish

I plan to take at least AP government and AP Spanish next year and maybe AP psych to bring my weighted GPA back up

I am applying for the science and Spanish national honor societies as well as the regular one and will likely get in

I will have been a summer counselor and volunteered at an animal shelter for two hours every Sunday for all four years when I apply

I started a club for animals this year and we are doing a drive to collect supplies for the shelter

I just got CPR certified and am taking an EMT course this summer to become EMT certified and work as an EMT the summer after senior year

I am a TA for the Spanish AP teacher in her Spanish 2 class
I am in JSA since 10th grade and plan to run for VP later this year
I joined the Spanish club and participated in my school’s cupcake wars this year and will next year
I have participated in Math League and Photo club since 10th grade
I was in a mole day club in 10th grade and part of stage crew in 9th
I have also babysitted my whole life- for family members and neighbors, not for money
I have been a part of a taxidermy association since last year

I am planning on doing a Friday externship with the vet next year as well

I plan to focus on my love of children, science and medicine in my essay and I would like to pursue a career in surgery- related to an interest in taxidermy perhaps- (either veterinary or human) or be a pediatrician- related to babysitting and being a camp counselor

I don’t know if this matters- my mom thinks it does- but I have also visited England, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Mexico

Edit: I visited Middlebury along with Cornell earlier in the year and I absolutely loved it (way better than Cornell) so I am going to apply ED

I don’t know, but human taxidermy sounds very Hannibal Lecter-ish. Best not to mention…Seriously, this is a bit all over the place. Try and focus. Pick one interest and highlight activities that show your depth. Your scores and grades arefine for Midd, but so are 14,000 other peoples. Make a compelling story for yourself-and I’m glad your mom is fine!

I didn’t mean to suggest that I wanted to do human taxidermy, but I think taxidermy and surgery are alike in that they both center on anatomy and precision.

I also meant to write children, animals and medicine

I’m just teasing you a little…
