Chances of getting into University of Michigan?

Hi. I’m currently in my junior year of high school and I was wondering if anyone could provide me with tips or advice regarding getting into UMich. Just to give you all some background information, I just moved to Michigan from another state so I’ll have attended two separate high schools. My unweighted GPA is a 3.71 and my weighted is a 4.15, I’m hoping with my AP classes this year, I will be able to boost it. I’m taking the SAT in November and I have been vigorously studying and preparing with a tutor, I’m hoping to get a 1400+.

In regard to my extra-curricular and co-curricular activities: I participated in student government as class president during my sophomore year in which I acted as communications liaison between the administration and my grade and planned/facilitated school events and fundraisers. I competed on Varsity Debate as cross-examiner 9th through 10th grade and participated in Model United Nations during my sophomore year. I also co-founded and acted as operations manager for a student-governed club, centered around community activism/service – we raised money for refugees, held a donation drive for domestic violence victims, hosted a children’s event at a local college about environmental awareness. This was all done at my previous high school.

At my new high school, I am planning to join Forensics Team and Model U.N. to continue on the path of competitive speech and debate activities. Additionally, I am involved with Future Problem Solvers, Environmental Activism Club and National Honor Society. I’m hoping I will excel enough that I will hold leadership positions in one or more of these activities come my senior year. Outside of school, I volunteer once to twice a week at the local nursing home, engaging in activities with residents with impaired memory (Alzheimer’s, Dementia, etc.)

If I were to attend UMich (specifically LSA) I would want to major in International Studies, Political Science or something of that nature. Is it worth it to apply Early Action? And given this information, if I boost my GPA and receive a high SAT score, do I have a strong chance of getting accepted?

Thank you in advance!

I forgot to mention the rigor of my coursework. During my sophomore year, I took AP Human Geography, AP US History, Honors French, Honors English, Honors College Algebra, and Chemistry. This year, I am taking AP Gov, AP Econ, AP Lang, AP EnvSci, Precalculus, and French. I will continue to take high level courses during my senior year.

Your course rigor is fine, but you need to focus on your GPA which is at the low side right now.

Agree that your GPA is on the lower side. But make sure you are using your UMich UW GPA. I just advised a friend who was worried her kids UW GPA was low that her child had a 3.95 as far as UMich was concerned and not the 3.68 that appeared on her transcript because she was a heavy A- kid and those covert to 4.0’s on UMich scale.

Oh okay, I was not aware that UMich used a different UW GPA. I recalculated it & it is 3.83 unweighted not 3.71

3.83 is a lot better than 3.71 although it is still below admission average. Try to bring it up further and also work on the test preparations. You should aim for 1450+ to have an above average score.
