Hi. I have posted this message in "Architecture Major", but no one responded. So here I am, see if anybody can help me here

I go to Pratt Institute for B.Arch. currently a 3rd yr. I want to study structural engineering after I graduate. Is it at all possible?
The difficult part is that I do want to get into a good school .. ie. Columbia, Cornell...
???
My current GPA is 3.1 should increase in the yrs ahead.
Have experience in a small Arch firm ..
currently doing some work for a prof who is also a structural engineering at a well known engineer firm.
Going to be tutor for steel or concrete classes.

I know I still have a long way to go, but since I know nothing about it.. just wondering if anyone here can help me about what should I do to increase my chances???

I'm in structural engineering grad school now so maybe i can offer some advice. Have you taken the prerequisite structural engineering classes? If not, perhaps take some at a local school and do well to prove you can handle the work. And maybe look beyond Columbia and Cornell? There are plenty of good structural engineering schools out there. Particularly if you are willing to go out of state. Regardless, MEng at Cornell and MS admissions at Columbia are a bit of a joke as they are unfunded degrees. I wouldn't discount your chances too much. Do well on essays, try to take more engineering classes, and try to do structural engineering research for anyone if you can.

Did you take any engineering courses in your BArch program? Structural analysis, Re-inforced Concrete Design, Soil Mechanics, Steel structures, etc. If yes, you won't have much problem. If not, take these courses if they are offered at your school. Or else, look for universities which let you take these courses before your MEng classes. Btw, have you considered doing Architectural Engineering?

Do talk to your professors. They should know better.

Yeah thanks. I am taking some engineering courses, steel, concrete design, and statics. I do fairly well in them. However, since Pratt is an art school so these classes are like jokes. I am just wondering what are the requirements or better-to-haves Grad. schools are looking for for MEng.....

btw. for some reason I thought Cornell has a good structural Eng program. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't really want to go out of state unless I have to .... is there any good schools in NY that you can suggest, Blah2009?

Cornell structural engineering is pretty good but its in a bit of a rebuilding phase. And Columbia's has always been kind of behind. Nonetheless, they are the leading programs in NY. I'm suggesting that some of the better structural engineering programs out there include UTexas, UIllinois, Berkeley, Stanford, and Georgia Tech. But I don't know if you are willing to leave NY. To get into Cornell, you probably need around a 3.4-3.5 and a 1300 GRE (they don't care about verbal and writing too much) to get in without funding. Try to talk to some engineering profs to see where you stand.
