I was wondering what the odds of a sophomore acceptance was for a lot of the New England/Mid-Atlantic boarding schools.

This is my second year applying to boarding school, last year I only applied to one and got wait listed. I did, however, get into a local private day school, and that is where I am currently enrolled. So this year my family and I chose to take the admissions process a lot more seriously.

That being said, we know the general odds at all the schools I'm applying to. Most of the ones I have seen more specific odds for in regards to freshman acceptances, but what about specific sophomore acceptance odds? Such as how many kids get in, but more importantly, how many kids apply?

I am applying to Choate, Taft, Pomfret, Berkshire, Mercersburg (PA), St. Andrews (DE), and Christchurch (VA).

I have never seen or heard specific admit rates for freshmen disclosed by any school. I tried to ferret out admit rates by grade from the admissions people at my S’s interviews, but they all hemmed-n-hawed. Are you sure you are not confusing supposed freshman admit rate with overall admit rate?

This U.S. Dept of Education website does not address how many applications a school gets, but it does show how many enrolled kids there are in each grade, so you can calculate the number of available slots for new sophomores. This might give you an idea of how competitive sophomore admissions is at one school relative to other schools.

If the school is coed, you have to divide the slots by 2, for girl slots & boy slots.

@GMTplus7 I was assuming all the “we have x amount of students applying for x amount of spaces” applied to the freshmen, but I guess I’m wrong. I have looked into class numbers from freshman to sophomore year at some of the schools, but I will look into it more specifically. All the schools I am applying to are co-ed, so I will have to divide the number in half.

At my kids’s school (not one of the above), the school newspaper published the number of applicants by grade and the number of target spots by grade (but not the number admitted) in an April issue. This is downloadable in the publications section of their website. You could check the newspapers of the schools you’re interested to see if you can find similar articles.
