Definitely check with your school and your school district web site. We have one high school here where someone left their entire estate to graduates from that school only who were going to be science or math majors in college.
Hi, I am a Florida resident - currently a junior - who is also looking to fund a significant amount of tuitions throu scholarships. I have relatively strong stats(4.0 GPA, 2260/1520) and about 300 hrs(I can get more). Does anyone know worthwhile local schplarships that might be helpful. Also I am not a us citizen or permanent resident so can I still apply for the best buy, wal mart scholarships. Thanks

bad*boy -- Unfortunately it is very difficult to find U.S. scholarships for people who are not actually U.S. citizens... Can you apply for merit scholarships at your first choice school? A lot of schools offer full or partial rides to National Merit Semifinalists, Finalists, and Scholars.

I entered maybe 5-6, and 2 of them I got recognition. Just like top 25 or whatever and no money, but a certificate in the mail or something. Definitely not worth it IMO.

I have a bad GPA. It's like 2.5 or something. Are there any scholarships for painfully mediocre half-asian kids? My SAT is 1740 wich isn't bad from what I hear.

Thanks for replying ceebee63, I had a 236 on my PSAT, so I'm pretty confident of being a National Merit Semifinalist. I was looking at WashU since it gives out a lot of aid and is a very well respected school. Can I still apply to local scholarships in Florida - none of them seem to have a citizenship requirement?

Check out Scholarship Programs - College Scholarships from Scholarship America .. My son is from Illinois. He was able to get scholarship from them. Good luck.

I personally think that scholarships that require custom essays are the least efficient way of getting money I can think of. They are tremendously time consuming, usually have very small awards (not always) and have a very low probability of success after all that work...

I haven't found time to apply to many fastweb scholarships. the good thing is: many allow online submission, which is realy easy. I generally just use essays I've already written if possible. I haven't won any, but I've become a finalist for one, but then again, I've only applied to like 5.
Usually the ones easier to win are ones that are really specific and only apply to a limited number of people, like "Your Mom is a Librarian Scholarship" (I just made that one up).

what do you guys think about other scholarship searches besides Fastweb. I've always stuck with Fastweb, but if anyone thinks there's a better engine, please share.

Many of those scholarships say that applicant must demonstrate need.

Sorry to hijack, but what does "demonstrate need" mean. If Stanford offered me some k's for aid, does that mean I have "demonstrated need" or enough need to be eligible for the scholarship?

help anyone?

"Demonstrate need"
It means they'll want some financial/income info from your folks. Stanford offers merit and needs-based aid so look at your packet to see exactly what you received.

it was not much (but still some) from Stanford (prefer not to say exactly how much), but my concern is that scholarships won't think that I'm in need at all and applying to them would be futile. (The scholarship I'm concerned about is the Elk one, anyone know about that?)

never mind, thanks!

vtoodler,
Can you kindly post the website where/how you apply for the $8,000 scholarship in Missouri for students who score over 30 in ACT? What is the name of the scholarship?
