hoping for annenberg... print journalism but prolly wont get that and would go to reg undergrad colelge at USC

Hi. Im currently a male senior from CT (fairly competitive public high school in one of the rich counties) Im curious as to what you think my chances are.

GPA- UW 3.4 W 3.7 (low, I kno, but GC wrote about how junior year I missed almost a month of school whilst in 4 ap and 3 honors classes with shingles+surgery which is y my gpa isnt as high as it could be)

School doesnt rank...

Frosh and soph years u can only take 2 honors classes, which I did and from there on I have one of the most demanding courseloads

Teacher recs - i read one of them who said i was one of the best she had had in 17 years of teaching and that while i was a junior in a class meant for seniors i emerged the leader and made evereyone else around me perform better... the second one that i sent i didnt read becuase the teacher doesnt allow it but i asked my GC if i had to send one which would i send and he said it was a tossup... so it mustve been very good

My essays were actually fairly good... writing is kinda my thing

i got a
5 on the AP English Lang
4 on AP US Hist
4 on AP Psych (self study)
3 on AP Govt (self study)

the thing that im hoping to make up for my gpa are my pretty good ecs...

I am...
-vice president of fbla
-captain of debate (finished 5th at state finals)
-editor of the school paper
-co-founder of my own tutoring business
-One of two students on a regional board to talk about the problems teen face in my community
- two varsity sport (wrestling and track)
- ambassador of intramural football league in charge of arranging playing times
- i umped baseball for a few years
- part of youth chapter of charity organization that sends money to sponsor schools in villages in India
- went to a third world country where mom grew up to help teach english (wrote one of my essays kinda about this)

im also having an interview in new york and i dont mean to sound pretnetious or facetious but i almost always give a very positive impression... assuming this happens...what do you think?

Actually, your stats look very much like mine. I had the exact same SAT score, same GPA range, and was involved in FBLA. I don't know if you'll get into print journalism right away, but you can always switch majors once you're in USC.

good point. private schools like USC allow more switching of majors than elite publics do, particularly those that are impacted in certain majors. you could declare something soft like education or even undeclared and then work hard and prove you are annenberg worthy. it's a top five program, world class, and only getting better.

even though my writing is low, its still 94th percentile for the nation... is that really too low (essays were 11, twice)... and a 5 on AP Lang woudlnt show that im a good writer?

also, im not really goin for print journalism... ill apply undeclared... and my interview was yesterday and it went pretty well.... do i consider USC a slight reach or more than that (according to CB im in top 25% of SAT scores, but GPA is low...)

Whatever, I got a 690 in Writing and had a 3.5 UW GPA...but then again, I probably just got really lucky. I just reread your extracurriculars - pretty cool! It's a slight reach.

Geez, I wish I had a good counselor. I've had three in my four years of hs, and this one just came in at the start of the year. I missed over three months of school last year for spinal surgery and still received straight A's in 3 AP's, 3 Honors and 2 outside college courses. I doubt she even has a clue. I gave her a short resume with my application, but didn't think to include that fact as I deemed it nothing special. Now, I'm thinking otherwise...
