last summer I went to a french immersion camp and the summer before that I did a volunteer program in Peru for a month.

Potential hooks: I skipped a year in French and the language coordinator at my school loves me and has offered to write me a recommendation which I think would be good because she's also heard me sing and raves about my voice.

I'm thinking of applying to Middlebury ED1 or ED2. Does anyone have any idea of what my chances would be like? I'm afraid I might just be throwing away my ED by applying to such a competitive school, and I would appreciate any comments. Also, if you can comment on whether or not you think Middlebury is a particularly preppy school, because I'm kind confused about that aspect. If you've read this really long post, then thank you so much!

i don't think you're throwing it away, you seem like a very strong ED candidate...you have great grades, impressive ap results, and respectable scores and extracurriculars. if it's your first choice, definitely go for it.

i'd definitely affirm your suspicion that its preppy, the campus was pretty polo shirt laden last time i was there. but there are also plenty of "crunchy," dreadlock types, so it isn't really an unaccepting fratboy type of place.

That's depressing. I really liked Middlebury because of its language program, but from what I've been hearing lately it's a prepster's paradise.

don't be prep-phobic, it's a really friendly campus, not whatever you're used to in high school

You should definitlely visit campus to get your own impressions. There might be a larger contingent of polo-sporting students than other comparable schools, but if you took the time to sit down and talk with most of them, you would be hard pressed to describe them with any negative adjectives that the work "prep" connotes. As BP said, it is an extremely friendly campus.

You are a good ED candidate for Middlebury. Even if it's mostly preppy, you'll be fine if there 's a substantial minority of kids more like you. But ED commits you to going there--so do visit and form your own impressions before making that commitment.

According to Hillel statistics, among undergrads a bit more than 10% are Jewish.

Middlebury is no preppier than Williams, Dartmouth, Amherst, Bowdoin, etc.

Thanks for your replies. Another question: I heard there were a lot of dances organized at Middlebury. Does anyone happen to know whether this is true, first of all, and secondly how important they are as part of the social scene?

I'm on the activities board, so I'll get this one.

Every year there is one huge semi-formal dance that takes place in February. There is also a dance at the beginning of the year, and at the end. They are referred to as the First and Last Chance Dances, respectively. Throughout the course of the year, there are regular dance parties in the social hall, with the majority of them being themed. In addition to these, the activities board will also have a Fall and Spring formal, starting next year.

As for how integral they are to the social scene, it's a nice option to have. The most attended and talked up dances of the year are the First and Last Chance Dances, as well as the Winter Carnival Dance in February. The rest of the dances really aren't quite as well attended, and as with most other events on campus, tend to really pick up an hour or two after it starts.

Also, there are two dances that take place during Freshmen Orientation: the 80's Dance Party, and the Square Dance. Both are ridiculous amounts of fun, and are often the highlight of many people's orientations.

can anyone else comment on my chances?
