Chances? Recommendations?

Chinese, 17 years old, CA resident

Acedemic:
SAT New: 560CR, 690W, 800M = 2050
SATII: projected 750 Physics and 750 for 2C

Senior (this year) schedule: (most rigorous courseload, except no AP language)
Biology AP
English 4 AP
Govt/Econ AP
Calculus AB AP

Got a 3 on the AP US History AP exam... sick

GPA: 3.4 UW 3.91 W (SO SO SO SO SO DISGUSTING, I KNOW!)

OK, extra curriculars:
Went to rural China for 3 weeks to teach oral English to English teachers there. It's one of Intel China's biggest community service things.. worked there for about 9 hours a day. I lived in the school and ate at the cafeteria, which is some kind of payment I guess. I had 24 students. Uh... I guess its only special because absolutely nobody else has it, otherwise its nothing worth mentioning.

Taught English in Shanghai for 3 weeks, not that its something in particular, either. Worked at an office. Primary duty was improve the workers' oral English, secondary duty was help out in the office doing clerical stuff. Got a really good review by the supervisor and that's about it. 8 hours a day. Was volunteer work but they gave me 1000yuan ($120) (and a Tshirt) at the end as a gift.

Went to school in Shanghai for 02-03 (freshman). Editor in Chief for newspaper and yearbook there.

Parents seperated. live with mom and she gets crap pay. (<60K)

JSA for 2 years, about 75 credit hours. no position held

Chinese National Honor Society 2 years, 50something credit hours, no position

Football Team 10th grade.

private tutor for half a year, got paid

scorekeeper for basketball games, got paid

What more can i say? (i'm flippin doomed)

My essays should be pretty good since i got a lot of teachers from China who will read them (they are mostly HYPS grads, dunno what they're doing in China). My teacher recs should be mediocre since im planning on asking my senior year teachers. ALso, one more thing, my essays are gonna be flippin crazy as in the topics will be crazy. They're all gonna be toss-up, out of the box crap-shoot ones (appropriate for UChi, dunno about others).

Well, this is a pretty brief but complete history of the past four years. Now, let's get to the schools in question..... (the best part)

NYU Stern
U Chicago
Rice
Carnegie Mellon
Washington U in STL
Johns Hopkins
Emory

Ann Arbor
Urbana Champaign
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UCSD
UC Davis
UC Irvine
UC Santa Barb

Please reccommend schools too.

am i dead or what??? all i can say is game over!!!!~~~ community college here i come!!

kenneth2005:

UCB/UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCI/UCD/UCSB: Match

bizzump!!!!!!!!!

I think you're pretty set to get into the UCs. Are you taking the SATs again?

Don't even joke about committing suicide over something like your college admissions chances. Unfortunately, there really are students who commit suicide over not getting into their college choices. What a waste of their lives!

Not sure about the UC schools but:

NYU Stern
U Chicago
Rice
Carnegie Mellon
Washington U in STL
Johns Hopkins
Emory

Are all reaches. Rice, U Chicago, Washington U, Johns Hopkins, Emory are all high reaches I think, not to lower your self-esteem or anything, but seriously, it's much harder to get into the upper-echelon schools as advertised and much easier to get into the mediocre schools.

I hope that the value of your life isn't based on where you go to college!

Hmm...well mine is

What is your UC GPA? That really will be the deciding point for UCLA, UCB and UCSD. I'd say your chances are decent at UCSB, UCDavis and UC Irvine, but again, I'd want to know your UC GPA before making any definitive statement. For U Mich - GET YOUR APPLICATION IN NOW!!! Your chances will be better earlier in the admissions cycle, rather than later.

Don't get crazy over this. Take a shot at the reach schools, but have a back up plan you can be happy with.

I think you better apply to a community college. With a GPA like that, you will be lucky to even get in there. Maybe you should just go pick up an app at the local mcdonalds.

ouuuch, that was harsh.

don't worry, a 3.4 isn't too bad for schools like UCI esp since ur a CA resident. one girl i know didn't take any SAT II'S and got in to UCI. and you always have UCSB which i think is a definite match. i might retake SAT though.

bump one mo' gain

ps, my weighted UC gpa is like, 3.85 or something else thats not over 4.0

pps, meaning its an instant "no"

You over estimate the UC's. Only UCLA and UCB need GPA's over 4.0.

seriously. and i know a girl who had like 16 b's and got into UCB. prolly by the skin of her teeth. but she got in.
