Chances @ Tier 1 Schools: Be HONEST!!

Hey I will be a senior next year, and I am trying to figure out which schools to apply to. Here are my stats, be honest, I wont take it personally!

I'm a female at a top school in massachusetts (Extremely competitive)

GPA- 3.8/4 uw - ive taken the hardest courses available (2 APs junior year, 4 senior yr. and all honors)
SAT I- 2210 (750 cr, 720 m, 740 w)
SAT II- 710 Ic, will take 2 more in fall
ECs-
Varsity Soccer 4 years (Captain)
NHS (Treasurer)
Key Club (Executive Board)
Freshman Orientation Leader
Leadership Class (I was selected for this)

Awards- Ive gotten a bunch for soccer, and 2 academic awards
Essay- I just started working on it.. should be good.
Recs- One incredible one, one good one.

Schools I'm Considering:

Brown (ED)
Amherst
Williams
Tufts
UPenn
Wesleyan
Bowdoin
BC
Trinity College

I thought that I might have a chance at one of my reaches (Amherst, Williams, UPenn etc.) I thought that I could probably get into Tufts, although I have heard that it is getting to be a very competetive school so I am getting worried.

Thanks in advance!!

Brown, Amherst, Williams, Tufts, UPenn with be reaches. Wesleyan possibly as well. Bowdoin, BC will be matches, Trinity a safety.

Brown (ED) - Reach
Amherst - Reach
Williams - Reach
Tufts - Match
UPenn - Reach
Wesleyan - High Match
Bowdoin - Safety
BC - Safety
Trinity College - Safety

Brown, Amherst, Williams, and UPenn I put down as reaches not so much because of your stats, which are competitive for all of those schools, but because so many kids with similar stats apply, and these schools are so damn selective. In short, you'd be just another average applicant at Brown, Amherst, Williams, and UPenn, and average applicants at these schools have about a 15% chance of acceptance.

And regarding Tufts...Yeah, it's gotten more competitive, but your stats are quite competitive for Tufts. Figure you have about a 50/50 chance there.

Yes. Keeping in mind that Tufts is slightly less selective (26% overall, ~20% RD), Most students applying to Tufts as well will have those competitive stats...if you take a look at the CollegeBoard you will see the the #'s for first years lines up almost exactly with Amherst, Williams, UPenn, and Brown (give or take 10-20 pts here and there). That's the big trap - top students apply to Tufts without realizing the highly competitive nature of the applicant pool and, if rejected, think of it as some mistake. Just my thoughts.

True. But her cr+m score puts her right at the 75 percentile for Tufts applicants and her GPA is excellent. Not a shoe-in, but a very strong applicant. I'd stick with the 50/50 chance estimate.

I think everyone here neglected how important your soccer background is. Contact the coaches of the schools you are applying to. If you continue soccer, you will get into every one of those schools. I'm not kidding. Two of my friends got into Duke and Georgetown because of track and soccer, respectively. Congratulations. (Oh, this is only applicable if you keep your grades as they are now.)

Good chance at Tufts. In at BC and Trinity. Solid chance at lottery schools.

Thanks to all who posted.. I will definitely keep in mind how competitive Tufts can be. Ill keep you updated on which schools i end up applying to and where i get in! Any additional input is welcome!

Looking at the people on CC who were accepted ED to Brown, I'd say you're a match/slight reach.

Hey everyone. Do you guys think that brown would be a good choice for an ED for me? Do you think I should aim higher/lower? Thanks again.

The only "good choice" for ED for you (or for anyone) is the one school you absolutely love. DO NOT apply ED only for the "bump" it might give you in admissions. Apply ED only if the school is your very top choice, and you want to go there more than you want to go to any other school on your list.

Only you can say if Brown is a good choice for you, and to hell with your "aim".

"The only "good choice" for ED for you (or for anyone) is the one school you absolutely love"

I agree 100%. The ED racket has destroyed the idea of "choosing a school that is right for you - that you love" by becoming a tool for admissions. What if you don't find a school that's 100% you? So I definitely agree, apply to ED Brown if you really can see yourself there, but remember, ED at Brown's binding. If you have too many drawbacks with the school, apply somewhere else.

Thanks for the input. I guess what I meant when i asked that was whether i even had a shot. Like, if a person with terrible stats really wanted to go to Stanford, say, it would be a waste for them to apply ED because they would probably never get in. It would be better if they found a school that was a little bit more realistic to use ED on.

Brown and Amherst would probably be my top two choices. Its hard to say which I like more and both of them are very competitive. Does anyone know their admission stats?
