Chances to get into Stanford or CMU Computer Science

Dear all,

I'm a graduate student at Georgia Tech in ECE with a major in Telecommunications and Signal Processing. Before, I got an Engineering Diploma from a French Grande Ecole school in Telecommunications and Networks. I'm originally from Morocco. Currently I'm doing an internship at a major telecommunication company in Tokyo for 6 months working on a Software Defined Networks subject. I also did an internship last year at a Software Company in the south of France.

Since I was a child, my dream school was Stanford or CMU for a Masters or a Phd in Computer Science. This is why I'm willing to retake the GRE exam to improve my GRE verbal score. (Expected: V:156-160 Q:167-170). I have also strong recommenders: One American professor, One French professor and my Japanese supervisor.

I want to know please if I have any chances to get into these two famous universities even as a Masters or Phd Student (I don't have yet any publications)?

Also is there any other university that could fit my profile? I'm most interested in California state.

Many Thanks and Kind Regards,

Grades are part of the equation, despite the fact that you’re having some telecommunications-related work/research experience…

Thanks for your answer. I forgot to mention that I have a 4/4 GPA at Georgia Tech and 3.85/4 at the French Engineering School. I’m top ranked in my class …

Please Any Thoughts? :-/

I would really appreciate your advice folks. That would really help me conceive an idea about my future plot.

No one here will know your chances. You are better discussing that with your advisors. Your personal statement and letters will be important. You will tell your story and your aim. There is no ‘chances’ in grad school. These colleges are very difficult admits. A PhD is a research degree so the extent that your have research experience and that your LOR reflect your research potential would be key. Also research interests aligned with faculty would be important.

Don’t know about a MS. And seeing that you are in an MS or PhD program it seems strange to apply for MS.

lol that a small child would have any idea of which university would be best for his PhD.

Hey! Thanks a lot for your answer. I really appreciate it.

Actually, I’m not a Phd Student. I will graduate by May 2015 and have a Masters in ECE. During my studies, I discovered that I’m fond of Computer Science and coding. So the dilemma now is I don’t know which program I should apply for: a Masters or a Phd ? Which one is more accessible given my profile and those prestigious universities?

I’m open to the idea of doing research but in the same time I want to gain first more knowledge in computer science through a Masters.

I really can’t decide :</p>

Thanks folks!

Any helpful soul?

If you want a MS in CS why are you getting a MS in CSE? You have so much money to spend on another MS? You won’t get into a PhD program of that rank without significant research experience. Either do some now or I don’t know what to say. If you like coding, get a job coding. If you want to do CS research prepare yourself for a CS PhD. Talk to people at your university, they can advise you better.
