Chances to go to Exeter or Andover for senior year.

Sorry, I'm totally noob at this, but I'm interested in attending these prep schools as a senior.

According to Exeter's website, to apply for grade 12, I just need PSAT/SAT/or ACT scores. (No SSAT, I think, but I could be wrong. Remember, I'm totally noob at this)
**
Current State:** CA
Current high school: Large public school.
Class Rank: Does not rank, but would be 1/550
GPA (unweighted): **4.0
**GPA (weighted):
5? I think
PSAT: 207. I cringe when I look at that score. Hopefully I can send this year's though, but it'd probably come out too late.
SAT I: 2200. Will try to retake if it's not good enough; 2200 was my score without studying in the middle of soph year.

AP Courses taken:
AP Calculus BC (5)
AP Biology (5)
AP World History (5)
**
AP Courses taking this year:**
AP Statistics
AP US History
AP Chinese
AP Computer Science

(most rigorous course load)

Community Service:
Red Cross Taiwan: Traveled to Taiwan summer between soph and jr year to help mentally challenged, elderly, children.
Key Club /B. Extremely active; attends events every weekend. Involved since freshman year.
**California Scholarship Federation:
Member starting sophmore year. Elected to VP for junior year.
Link Crew: Part of 15 man planning committee; oversees 150 leaders, who in turn are in charge of the 600 freshmen. Helps freshmen adjust to high school life.

Arts:
Photography. Started in the middle of my sophomore year. Cost of my equipment (DLSR and lens) purchased with the money I made from freelancing. Contest history: Won grand prize x1 (national), finalist x2 (international), exhibited x1 (international), published x1 (national), published x1 (international). Will be entering more contests, current contests were won in a 6th month period after I started photography. Camera intern for tri-state KEY Club District Convention.

Work Exp:
I do freelance graphic design for small dotcoms; I started in the middle of freshmen year and built my portfolio while steadily increasing rates. I've designed CD covers for a couple of small artists. Cumulative income is $10,000+. I guess this kind of falls under "arts" as well.
Tutor: Alg 1

WILL BE APPLYING FOR FINAID; family income < $75,000.

Anyone have any advice? I'd love to go to Exeter or Andover.

If you are not an athlete then it will be extremely hard to make it in for senior. Junior might have a teeny bit better chance but still, unless you have an amazing hook very hard. How about trying for some lower tier schools?

Since I’m already in the middle of my jr. year in high school, would it be weird if I take jr year again instead of going onto sr year?

Does photography recognized on an international level count as a hook? Again, I’m not familiar with prep school admissions.

lots of people repeat. i am not sure about repeating junior year but I am possibly repeating 9th grade. repeating is not a bad thing in the world of boarding school

Will it be a hindrance to applications to colleges such as HYPS, Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, etc?

You’re applying to a new high school as a junior. Wow, you must be really lonely and have lots of time on your hands.

Seriously, everyone who applies at your point in life is an athlete applying for a PG year. Do you have any idea how much of a hassle getting letters of recommendations and transcripts will be when you’re 3000 miles away? Do you think that colleges will care at all that you went to Exeter if you only attended the school for 3 months before applying? Do you like not have any friends at all?

Wow, that was pretty harsh.

I’ll let my elections onto high positions on the two largest clubs on campus speak for itself.

Wow randombetch that is harsh maybe your name should be random*****…just saying…First of all not EVERYONE is an athlete because if all the people at your school are athletes then wow. First of all I think colleges will care because getting into Exeter is hard as it is but ovbuisly it won’t have as much as of an affect as if you got in as a 9th grader. I bet he has way more friends than you because he isn’t such a mean person.

Hey James are you an international student because that would make it very hard and getting FA might be pretty hard too other than I think you have alot going for you no matter where you end up=)

Haha sorry I didn’t see the CA there

My parents made it pretty clear this afternoon they aren’t approving of me going to Exeter/prep school in general, so I don’t think it’s going to happen. Thanks anyways.

LOL. Reread my post and try again. “Ovbuisly”, not everyone at Exeter is an athlete (did I say that? No). Nice comment about my name - only there’s a slight chance I thought about that before you since, after all, I did choose my name. Nice try though. By the way, what are you doing on collegeconfidential? From your post, I feel like you’re not even in middle school yet… Are you? (If so, then sorry!)

It’s not that hard to get into a freaking high school. Any college that’s impressed with a student getting into a high school is pathetic. Good schools are not going to care what Exeter thinks of students - they can form their own opinions.

And I’m only mean to people who are complete idiots.

JamesChang- nice to know your parents have more sense than you do.

Seriously, everyone who applies at your point in life is an athlete applying for a PG year

Really? you didn’t say everyone yeah I didn’t think so.
Any college every college is impressed people say that it doesn’t matter but open your eyes. Exeter and Andover have about the same students as a public high school yet 30 precent of their students each year end up going to IVY league schools I wonder why hmmm?? Ovbuisly I’m either in middle school or high school why else would I post things about the SSAT and applications?

A comment: You need to chilax and stop making people feel bad you wouldn’t like either

And yes it is really hard to get into Exeter and Andover…I’m sure you wouldn’t say that about Harvard or Yale

Listen kid, “everyone who applies” is not the same as “everyone who applies at your point in life.” Did you not learn how to read complete sentences yet? I’m talking about juniors/seniors applying to Exeter.

They have high acceptance rates to upper end schools because being successful at these top schools shows you have what it takes to do well in college. When you go to Exeter as a senior, colleges will have NO GRADES at all from Exeter when the application is submitted, and only 1 semester’s worth of grades will be considered at all during the process (mid-year report grades). Obviously is spelled “obviously” you moron.

And I don’t see why you’re bringing up Harvard admissions to try to support your point when you’re talking to someone who got into Harvard and Princeton. If you think that Exeter and Andover admissions are even comparable, then you’re going to be receiving a wake up call pretty soon.

Listen, you don’t know anything. You need advice from me - I don’t need advice from you.

although I agree with randombetch that MOST people who apply at that point are athletes, some are incredible academically or in the fine arts. you still have to have a large hook.

Exeter and Andover, although not as hard to get into as to say… Harvard or Yale, they are still considered the “Ivy Leagues” of private boarding schools. As they are extremely competitive I think it may help with your college apps but it may not. Overall i recommend staying at your current school.

Wow is so much drama typical of prep schools

you said it jameschang
