Chances With TERRIBLE Test Scores?

I am not a good standardized tester (is that a word?), as you will see below. How much will this hurt me:

SAT: 670 W, 620 M, 550 CR
SAT IIs: 620 MI, 640 BioM
ACT : 28 (28 English, 28 Math, 29 Reading, 27 Science, 30 English/Writing, 12 Essay)

How inconsistent...

GPA: School doesnt release GPA for some reason... [A- to A average]
Rank: 19/276 -- Top 7% in a respected, competitive public school

School Info:
Will have a total of 6 AP Classes:
AP Biology
AP Language and Composition
AP United States History
AP Literature
AP Environmental Science
AP Spanish

All other academic classes (math.) have been honors.

AP testing: Collegeboard still has not sent me my scores (had to test late due to circumstances beyond my control)... But I am sure I didnt do well, knowing my testing record.

Extra's:
Project Adventure Facilitator - Help teacher/students in Project Adventure (gym class x10)

Essays: Great
Personal Statements: Witty and enjoyable
Teacher Rec: Did not read
Counselor Rec: Did not read
Hook (if any): I have won many awards and am considered "very fast" in the world of Sport Stacking (stacking cups; Unique?)... if you can call that a hook.

State or Country: Connecticut
School Type: Non-Denom
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Ouch, huh?

I am applying to (All RD):

Columbia [my parents are making me]
NYU [CAS, where I want to go]
Northwestern
Northeastern
Boston University
Fordham University
Pace University
St. John's University
University of Connecticut

I was thinking:

Columbia - No chance
Northwestern - Little geographical chance
Boston University - Reach
NYU - Reach
Northeastern - Match
University of Connecticut - Match/Safety
Fordham University - Safety
Pace University - Safety
St. John's University - Safety

My heart is set on NYU (Economics;Pre-Business).

Thanks in advance!

Columbia - Reach
Northwestern - Reach
Boston University - Slight Reach
NYU - Reasonable Reach
Northeastern - Safe Match
UConn - Safe Match
Fordham - Safe Match
Pace - Safety
St. John's - Safety

i agree with above completely

Ummm, your class rank and test scores aren't exactly inconsistent, unless you go to some bourgeois prep school. the above posters are correct.

The inconsistency I was speaking of was referring to my Reading score on the ACT being higher than my Math, as well as Science being my worst (and lower than Math) score on the ACT, but being my best SAT II.

So I do still stand some chance at NYU?

Any more opinions? I am still freaking out =-</p>

Saved from page three.

good mix of reach/match/ safety, well too many safety for my taste, but if you are going scholarship hunting or you like those schools go for it.

Many schools were for scholarship reasons, hence the amount of safeties. I basically figured it to be 3 safeties, 3 matches, 3 reaches.

Although you already know my opinion...

Columbia - Reach
Northwestern - Reach
Boston University - Match
NYU - Match
Northeastern - Safe Match
UConn - Safety
Fordham - Safety
Pace - Safety
St. John's - Safety

NYU 2011...here we come

Welcome back College Confidential!

Anyone else not get their AP scores?

You know what would be totally awesome but sounds pretty dorky? Posting a video of yourself on Youtube of you doing some stacking. Wow, that was total spammage.

I agree with your assumptions about safetys/matches/reaches.. except I would say you have a .01 chance at Columbia because you never know. The stacking thing is really cool! I would actually play that up alot..
But you also don't have any business/math ecs... I don't know if that will hurt you.. but it probably doesn't help..

I think BU is more of a match... NYU is a slight reach... but Columbia is a huge reach.

Holy Cross is a good SAT optional school. Bowdoin is another but more selective.

Columbia is one of those feelings that you have to apply to atleast one Ivy League school just because it is an Ivy League school. I have no desire to attend Columbia, as I cannot major in undergraduate business. Same with Northwestern, even though it is a bit more realistic than Columbia.

My school does not provide any ECs in Business, and I had no desire to join the math team. The business classes we offer are strictly Level 2, and I decided to sacrifice these classes for my GPA.

Funny story, I have had videos of me stacking on Youtube before, but I took them down because they were horribly outdated. My counselor did not know who I was, so I brought my cups in to stack for her, and she called in the principal to watch. If anything I would say stacking makes me unique. I drafted one college essay about Sport Stacking, but I am not yet sure if I want to use it.

My heart is set on NYU, and I like to think I have a chance as long as my recommendations and essays/personal statements are solid.

My college list is finalized. I am ashamed of my SAT scores, yes, but I have to live with the fact that I cannot take a standardized test to save my life.

Hrrrm, well if you really don't want to go to Columbia or Northwestern, should you really be applying?

I received a letter about 2 months ago from Knox College urging me to apply. The kicker was that I didn't have to pay an application fee and they would let me know the decision within something like 3 weeks. So I talked it over with my college counselor and she said that the question you have to ask yourself is, if you do get in, would you go?

Of course, your parents are forcing you so make sure they pay the application fee!

Oh dont get me wrong, I would gladly go to Columbia or Northwestern if I had realistic chances.

I have the same letter from Saint John's University, which is why I am applying. If there is no application fee, quick decision, no essay/recommendations required, and priority scholarship opportunities, why not give it a shot. What do we lose... a couple stamps?

And trust me, I am not paying Columbia and Northwestern's application fees.

Interesting Tidbit: I just got my fastest stacking time, so I had to go through and change it wherever I mentioned it in my applications.
