I’m a junior in high school and am starting to look into colleges. My top choices right now are UNC Chapel Hill and Georgetown.
ACT score: 34 (writing: 10)
Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Weighted: 4.31
Class rank: 12/277
All honors classes, two AP classes this year (AP Calc BC, AP Bio), and mostly AP classes next year
Extracurriculars: Key Club, Student Council, Art Club (president), National Honors Society, Spanish National Honors Society, job at a retirement home for a year, 150-200 hours of volunteering, journalism staff member (writer and feature editor)
Awards: Chinese speaking and writing award, Freshman Art Student of the year, many awards from a local art competition (a gold key, 5 silver keys, and multiple honorable mentions), probably a National Merit Scholar (We just got our results from the PSAT back and I scored in the top three percent), one of my pieces of art was ranked top 300 in my state (Ohio)
Special note: I was the founding president of our art club. Since my freshman year, I’ve worked with and helped my art teacher to establish the club (which does many art related volunteer events).
For my essay: I will likely talk about my love for languages and international culture (considering I want to major in international relations). My freshman year I was taking Chinese, but for a multitude of reasons I decided to take Spanish. In order to be able to take AP Spanish, I needed to study and test out of Spanish 1 and 2. Thus, in four months I learned two years of Spanish. I have recently started studying Chinese again and hope to be somewhat fluent by the time college comes so I can study abroad. (I’ve heard colleges like when you incorporate extracurriculars into your essay).
Next year, I hope to seek more positions in my extracurriculars. I also hope to take AP art, AP spanish, AP statistics, AP microeconomics, AP English, and journalism.
** my school offers roughly 13 AP classes that one student can take (technically 16, but I said 13 because there are four AP languages and one student can only take one of them). I added this because I know that admissions look at your schools profile when making a decision. Also, I’m a white male.
What are my chances at getting into UNC? What are my chances of getting a scholarship to either of these schools? Thank you!
You should have a very decent chance at getting in. OOS admissions for Chapel Hill are far more selective than In State. That being said, many people including myself have been admitted OOS with a less compelling application. I can’t speak for Georgetown but I’d imagine your chances for UNC are pretty good.
@Nyxrex Thank you! Everyone says OOS admissions at UNC is kind of a crapshoot, but it’s nice to be able to gauge my chances. Do you like UNC?
I don’t know If I like it, lol. I was accepted and will be attending there this Fall! However, from what I’ve been able to see, I’ll enjoy it much more than my other option.
@Nyxrex what did you write about in your essays?
@jwaters I don’t even remember. I doubt it was anything important. Your essays will not make or break your chances if your academics and EC’s are up to par with what they are looking for.
Looks good for either school. Good luck!
I disagree about the essay comment. UNC receives plenty of qualified applicants–essays are an important way to further breaking down those applicants.
