Chances?

It seems like there are a hell of a lot of threads about chances of getting into a given college, so what the heck, I’ll jump on the bandwagon.

Here are the credentials:

GPA (weighted): 3.88
GPA (unweighted): 3.6-ish?
Class Rank: unranked; estimated top 10%
SAT: 730 math, 690 verbal, 680 writing
SAT II: 750 U.S. history, 650 math II
AP scores: AP Euro (sophomore year): 5; Calc AB (junior year): 5; English Language (junior): 4; U.S. History (junior): 4
Taking AP Calc BC, AP Lit, and AP Biology this year… if not for scheduling conflicts, I would be taking AP Gov/Pol and a fourth year language, but it didn’t work out for me

Hooks
-Resident of Philadelphia
-Parent is an employee of the City of Philadelphia
-I worked for the city for three summers

Extra-Curriculars
Music department at my school (our competition jazz band won the University of the Arts competition last year, which I’m pretty sure is a big deal)
Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper
Not much service, but I have done some service for the mentally ■■■■■■■■
I hold a steady one-night-a-week job

Essays: CommonApp essay I wrote on my experience working for the city as a lifeguard (tied in a lot of multi-cultural stuff)
Why I want to go to UPenn essay = middle of the road
Risk essay = pretty solid
What I like to do for fun was a little unique… I wrote about bodyboarding, which I really do like to do. haha

Recommendations from teachers I expect to be solid, although they do not really know me very well. I took a risk there.
Recommendation from my guidance counselor should be very good.
I didn’t read any of my recommendations

I’m not too concerned about whether I got accepted… I haven’t gotten an interview yet, but honestly if they don’t want me, then that’s just fine… but do you folks, in your infinite wisdom, think I’ve got a pretty good shot?

You seem like the kind of applicant who is very solid, but not particularly outstanding. You definitely have a shot- your scores are within Penn's average, you have some good ECs, your GPA is little low but still fine. I think your recs and essays will probably be really important to your decision. So..yeah, sorry that wasn't super helpful! Good luck!

well which school are u applying to? for wharton, u have lower chance than other schools..overall, average chance i think

u have a chance, but being from philly, it might be harder than if u were from somewhere else since penn probably wants a wide geographic diversity. but, u can never tell what is actually wanted.

I'm applying to Arts & Sciences... and thanks for the input.

Think it'll help that my GPA has gone up each year? (3.63, then 3.64, then 4.06, then 4.23 to average at 3.88)
