Changing Careers into Private Accounting?

Hi,

I'm an out of work lawyer who was never too happy about being an
attorney. After researching other careers, I've decided to look into
accounting.

However, having talked with some accountants and what they do, I think
my interest will lie with private accounting, ideally starting in a staff
accountant / financial analyst /budget analyst type position with a
corporation or government.

Not much interest in going public accounting, especially BIG 4.

Having said that, I am wondering what the best way to get into private
accounting would be? My BA is in political science so no help there.

I could take some courses here and there from community college/
extension schools and sit for the CPA Exam. But even if I pass, I would
just be applying to jobs as a CPA candidate with a BA in Political Science.
Not sure if I am going to land anything that way.

Plus, would a CPA help land a private accounting job anyways?

So what would be the best way to get into private accounting? Would it
still be the CPA route? OR do I really need to look into getting a MAcc or
an MBA?

Thanks!
