Hi,
I am waiting for my RD decision now. I applied to SCS, CIT, and MCS. While SCS is hard to get into, I think I have a good chance of being admitted to CIT and MCS. I marked mechE and biological sciences as majors to CIT and MCS. But I am not sure about it, especially about the bio sci. So how easy or hard is it to change my major within school, especially to transfer into a relatively popular major (like ECE)? Also, can I do double major across schools? What if the school does not admit me (like SCS)?
Can anyone with such experience comment on this? Thanks in advance.

I didn’t get into SCS and got into CIT restricted, yet now I’m an ECE major. If you want to declare ECE, you will very likley need to take intro to ECE and do well in it. As for transferring to SCS, they do have their own requirements (taking a couple of CS courses and doing well in them, probably). Quite a few ECE majors are transferring over to CS, so it can be done. The best way you can increase your chances or almost guarantee your way into another school or major is to show that you did very well in whatever you’re in now, and take a class or two to demonstrate interest. Getting to know a professor in your target department can also be a biiiig plus.

Transferring into CS (or double-majoring) is fairly straightforward—a few of my friends have done it. You just have to take the core freshman classes and do well; pretty sure that means 15122, 15150, 15251, and whatever the CS version of Concepts is called now. (Note: one of my friends was taking 15150 and 15251, having finished 15122 and Concepts, when he got officially accepted as a double-major.)

Cortina (one of the CS advisors) will probably be able to give you specific information on what courses you need to take.
