Changing Major to Mechanical Engineering as a Freshman?

Hi everyone! I was recently accepted to the pre-engineering program for CSULB, however, during the time I submitted the application until now, I had the time to think more carefully about my major and decided that mechanical engineering better aligned with my interests. I checked on the CSULB website and it seems that since I was admitted into a pre major, I would have to fulfill the major specific requirements before I can declare a major. During SOAR, would I have to schedule my classes according to the electrical engineering major or would I be able to take some mechanical engineering courses so I don’t lose any time?

Sorry, I realized that I phrased it kind of weirdly. Should I email the mechanical engineering department before SOAR about wanting to change my major so when classes get scheduled at SOAR, it will go more smoothly? Or can it be situated during SOAR? Thanks in advance.

Since you want to switch from one Engineering major to another, the pre-req courses you will be taking Freshman year are the same for both majors, so I would wait until you attend SOAR, talk to your advisor and map out you a schedule.

To be considered for admission to the major, applicants must demonstrate the following:

Minimum Cumulative GPA: 2.5

Minimum lower division preparation (grade of C or better required):

Major preparation courses:
MATH 122 – Calculus I
MATH 123 – Calculus II
PHYS 151 – Mechanics and Heat
Required General Education courses not covered by major preparation courses:
Written Communication
Oral Communication

Ah okay, thanks for the help!
