My DD has been plagued with medical problems for the past 2 years. She is finally able to return to her college, but is now not sure she wants to stay in her major, Accounting. She loves music and would switch to that if she thought she could make a decent living. I have to say, I know nothing about the music world. Is there a way she could support herself with a music major? She does not want to be a teacher. She was thinking more along the lines of working in the music industry or concert promotion. If anyone has any insight, i would appreciate it.

Try posting in the music majors forum. There are a lot of helpful people there with specific knowledge. For music promotion, I don’t think she’ll need a music major. But re-post in the music forum.

My niece has a music performance degree. She no longer is a member of any musical group but works for a city’s chamber orchestra coordinating many things.

Your D definitely needs to drop the accounting major if she no longer likes it. Any college degree, regardless of major, is an entry to many jobs. The fact that she was interested in accounting shows she values logical thinking, something compatible with music. However, she may be limiting herself with a music major for what she intends to do. She may want to add a music major, minor or some courses in that field to another major.

She needs to talk to her college advising service. There are likely aptitude and interest tests she can take to show areas she may enjoy but hasn’t considered.

She should talk to a music advisor. At my school, the number of required music courses is astronomical. She may even need to take a fifth year.

That said, if part of her program includes music production, with her business skills she could make a living on the other side of the baton.

Her school actually has a major in music with an emphasis in music production. It almost looks like a minor in business and gives them instruction in music producing, recording and concert promotion.
She was doing the accounting major because she wanted a decent job when she graduates, but, after all she’s been through, I told her I just want her to be happy. That’s when she said she would like to pursue music, but she wasn’t sure how she would support herself. I thought this music production thing was a good compromise
