Chapman EA - Class of 2025

Rejected FP EA. Creative Producing second choice, looks like I didn’t get that either. Looking at the rest of my application I think it all just comes down to that creative supplement film.

Didn’t do the Fellows interview, though I did reach out to counselors.

I was just accepted!
BFA Film Production with Dean’s Scholarship!
If you want to know any stats/EC’S let me know!

yes would love to hear if you don’t mind…thanks!!

oh congrats!!!

My GPA is 4.50 W/3.95 UW and my class rank is 34/647. I’ve taken 6 AP classes and I got 4s & 5s on the exams. I was on my schools broadcast news competition team, I was the secretary of the Media Club, and I was a daily news anchor on the announcements. I have volunteered with an philanthropy organization for 6 years & won a congressional award for most hours volunteered. I think the biggest thing is that I have an editing YouTube channel with 530,000 subscribers and 270,000,000 views. I talked that up a lot LOL. I was really nervous about my portfolio so I’m honestly shocked!

If you don’t mind me asking - how much is a Dean’s scholarship worth? Is there a dollar amount range?

The Dean’s Scholarship is $20,000 a year!

Got rejected EA FP with Screenwriting second choice. My application felt strong (I realize that’s hard to say that without any proof — I’ll just say I go beyond the academic requirements and I was very purposeful in my storytelling). The acceptance rate for the major is insanely low and I know they likely received more applicants than normal, plus I have other acceptances to fall back on. But I think it will still haunt me. I wonder what the faculty and admission’s officers were thinking when they viewed my work. I assume this is a common feeling; does anyone have advice on how to deal with it? (I should mention that Chapman was my first choice.)

I applied for the same thing, EA FP with screenwriting second. Also, Chapman was my first choice like you, but I was rejected. Seeing your comment brought me to tears because I understand your feelings. I want to say that you are not alone in this! I feel the same way. Looking over my film and writing samples, it’s impossible for me to identify what was wrong w my application. I worked so hard on it and I am confident that you did too! What I think has helped me the most today is putting into perspective how small the acceptance rates are. You were not rejected because your application, portfolio, and grades weren’t good enough. You were rejected because of chance, probability, and odds. This is not your fault. This is not a reflection of the quality of your work. As another creative, I know that sharing your art puts you in a vulnerable situation. It is so personal. One day, putting yourself in that vulnerable position will change the world. For now, be proud of yourself for fighting against those odds! Eat your favorite snack and get a few hugs, take the day or the next few days off. It is going to be okay.

Oh man, thank you for your reply! You’ve honestly made me feel a lot better. I can only imagine how many other applicants are in the same position as us. It sucks, but I think it could simply be a rock in the road that causes us to find another path (sorry for the half thought analogy). You’re totally right about how personal the rejection feels when really it’s not — being able to see that sentiment in words definitely helps. I hope you‘re able to make peace with it too! Empathy and passion will take you far and it seems like you have both.

Best of luck for any other programs you’re applying to! (I’d be interested to know which ones, but if you’re not comfortable sharing feel free to ignore.)

I’m so happy that I was able to help out. I’m grateful that you put your story here. It feels validating to hear from people who are in your shoes!

Also I’m cool to share my other programs. I’ve applied to most of the “big name” schools for film prod: LMU, Chapman, NYU, Emerson (Global BFA), USC, UCLA, UT Austin, and CalArts. My top choices are: Chapman (rejected), NYU, Emerson (accepted), and CalArts. I’m in CA so I did a few in state target schools that I won’t bore you with. I have just above average stats, lots of theater experience, a good amount of films under my belt, and a big love for directing and sound design! If you are willing to share too that’d be awesome. No pressure.

Ayeee I got into Emerson too (Media Production). I really wanted to do Global Film Art but alas I wouldn’t be old enough by the travel date. I’m on the east coast but CA would be great, kind of wishing I had applied to more schools out there. I applied to Chapman, LMU, Emerson, BostonU, Weslyan, & a couple in state safeties. I’m interested in directing and production design. I don’t actually have much film experience (the Chapman req was my first short film) but I am very invested in creative writing and visual arts.

Sound design sounds cool! Also, don’t let the rejection get you down about your other schools. There’s so many stories about ppl getting rejected from prestigious programs but getting accepted into others. Your list looks super exciting, I bet you’d do great at any of them!

Ok! Found the missing email. Rejected from Chapman film program, but invited to submit application for second choice major. My S21 is going to go for it! Desires the “whole package” of Chapman experience, and willing to put himself out there. Accepted to 8/10 schools, with this re-submission and one other outstanding. The road is long but paved with learning…

Really? How would you describe it? He is so impressed. I’m letting him drive the proces, so I don’t know all that much, other than having stayed in brand new dorm a dozen years ago when attending a conference! What I really am curious about is whether students get opportunities for internships, and jobs, eventually, in business/advertising/marketing, etc? But there is so much more to a school community!

I will just say to let him drive the process. I do not have personal experience at Chapman but I have many friends that thrived there. Many are very successful in their individual pursuits. A few moved from other parts of the country and stayed in the area.

Wonderful, thank you. Great advice!

Would love to hear what you think got you in. Did you make a strong film? The essays? What’s your GPA? Thanks for any details you’re willing to share. Congrats!

Hi, thank you! I made my short film completely by myself at home in order to be safe. I was the only actor, self shot it (with some help from my mom, LOL) and edited it. It’s definitely not what I ideally wanted to make but I think they might have appreciated that I was being cautious & had to do all the work myself. I think my essays were pretty good, I just tried to write organically with my own voice rather than make it super academic. I talked a lot about how I like to read & travel to try and show them my interests outside of film. I also talked a lot about my YouTube channel that I’ve been running for the past 5 years which is definitely a reflection of my passion for editing. My GPA is 4.50 W/3.95 UW with several APs and media related classes so I really think it was a combination of my academics and portfolio, although I was definitely not expecting to get in so I was very surpised!
