Cheapest Health Insurance for a college kid

Alright guys, my school's Health Insurance plan costs $2200 a year and I certainly cannot afford to pay that much. I am looking for a Health Insurance plan which is cheaper than that. Health Insurance is mandatory at my school and I'm just looking for anything which will help me get that requirement out of the way without spending too much. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Does your state have any health insurance programs?

I don’t know. I am currently not a resident of any state. I’m at UVA though.

If you have any pre-existing conditions, 2200 is the cheapest you will find right now. No question.

You aren’t on your parent’s insurance? That blows! I’m still on my mom’s which is really, super good. Any regular visit has a $15 copay, and the most a prescription can cost us for a month’s supply (as long as it’s something “necessary” is $20). We also don’t need referrals for specialists…so if I wanted to go to say an orthopedic surgeon, I could without first going to a primary care physician.

I do not have any pre-existing conditions, and am thankfully perfectly healthy. I just cannot afford to pay 2200 a year for health insurance. Do I have any other options like medicaid or something?

Colleges won’t let you waive the Insurance requirement unless you have proof of similar coverage. In other words, if you do end up finding a cheaper plan and it doesn’t meet the coverage of what the school is offering, they can still require you to purchase the plan that they are offering.

To give you some perspective: My medical insurance for a family of 4 costs around $23,000/yr. So, $2200 for a year of medical insurance coverage is not that outrageous.

“health care reform”

should’ve gone to college in Canada, its really cheap over there.

I think UBC’s mandatory health insurance costs something like $300/year

While we have great insurance, my daughter is across country and our insurance only covers her out of our service area if she is traveling. They do not cover a full time student out of the service area. We will probably buy the school policy for $1500. It is a lot of money and I am tempted to risk not buying it, but then realize one hospital visit can easily top $1500. I have decided it is not worth the risk. YOu might look into Kaiser Permanente if they are in that area. When our son first graduated from college but did not yet have insurance through his company, we bought Kaiser for $100/month. It had a fairly high deductible, but we bought it in case of a catastrophic illness. Once the deductible was met, the coverage was very good. They had even less expensive plans; this one was just what worked for us.

Yeah, a lot of low-income people seem to have Kaiser.

My school offers free health insurance if you need aid .

Kaiser isn’t available in Virginia. Come on guys, this is a serious situation. Please tell me some cheap insurance options.

Thats what you aren’t getting. 2.2k IS the cheap insurance option.

dude, ahsanxr, what happened to using your family’s insurance plan? That’s what I (along with most other people) did. If your family doesn’t have an insurance plan then thats a different story

2200/12=183 dollars a month.
Without healthcare reform I will have to pay about a thousand dollars a month once I age out of my parent’s health insurance.
Consider yourself lucky.

If you are too old for your parent’s insurance, or even if you’re over eighteen (possibly over 21) you do not qualify for medicaid while you are healthy. Poverty is not the only requirement, and unless you are not claimed as a dependent by your parents (or are under twenty one) it is likely their finances that come into question, not yours.
