Is there a need to bring a checkbook to college?

My parents keep pushing it but I feel that my debit card will suffice and I'll have one less thing to worry about. Opinions?

i dont use checks, just my debit card. the only thing it could be good for is so that you keep a physical log of your money spent.

Get a check book. There may be things you need to pay for by check, and you could lose your debit card.

Debit Card ftw. A checkbook may not be a good idea as there’s the possbility that someone could write out checks in your name. When I opened up my BofA student account the man helping me said he doesn’t reccommend bringing a checkbook to college.

I mean a Debit card is more convenient. Both could get lost; both could get stolen

At my school, to participate in any special honors program activities, you must pay by check. I think that’s the only time I’ve needed to use a check in college. Oh and when I subscribed to a magazine (I had to pay by check to get the specialnprice I think). I think they’re convenient to have, but if you really don’t want to bring them, they’re not necessary.

I use debit, never checks.

i always keep some on hand just in case, you never know.

There are a few random things I’ve had to pay for with a check.

Direct deposit for new jobs. Especially if you have a new work study job each semester.

Yes that’s right-- had to give the student employment office a voided check when I started tutoring for direct deposit.

You will use a debit card for just about everything, but it’s a good idea to have a checkbook.

I recommend getting a small lockbox for this sorta thing. At the very least it helps keep everything organized.

I normally use one of my three debit cards. It is stupid to use only one debit card unless you have means to other financial resources, since debit/credit card scams are occurring with greater frequency and that could take a while to get resolved. I use checks to pay for my college tuition since they need routing numbers and such.

A checkbook is a good thing to have even if you think you’ll never use it. I didn’t use mine for a long time, but lately I’ve been using it a lot for doctor co-pays and things like that. And I have also used it a few times because I wasn’t sure exactly how much money I had in my checking account and I wanted time to go straight home and transfer money out of savings just in case I was a few dollars off.

I think I also needed a routing number to set up my amazon marketplace account so that I could sell back my textbooks for more money than the school bookstore, and to set up direct deposit.

My DD uses checks to transfer funds from her home state checking account to her school state account. It is just easier and cheaper than trying to do it as external transfers online. Everything else she uses debit card for.

I take that back, she had to use checks to pay her club dues/apparel bills as they could not be charged to school account or paid using debit card.

It is tempting to use a debit card, but remember that the debit card is linked to a chequeing account. Therefore, it is wise to either use cash or cheque; this way, one can keep track and avoid overdrafts.

or you could jsut avoid overdrafts by knowing your balance at all times

I would say to forget about bringing a checkbook. The only time it has been suggested for me to use a check in college is for clubs and honor societies, but most will also accept cash or will take a cashier’s check. if it is offered and there is not a fee to do so, I will use a credit/debit card for every purchase I make and then pay the bill electronically. While your employer may request a canceled check to make sure you didn’t transpose your account and/or routing numbers, your financial institution should be able to issue a letter that accomplishes the same thing.

Dorms: No need for checkbook.

Fraternity: I used my checkbook to pay fraternity dues and to pay rent.

Apartment: I used a checkbook to pay for utilities, cable, internet, rent, etc.

I’m not sure what it’s like in other places, but around here you almost absolutely must pay apartment rent in check form. Same goes for internet.

In the dorms, I’ve used my checkbook countless times. It costs money to pay online using a debit card, and they don’t accept them at the desks, and it’s easier to pay my housing bill or put money on my food account with a check. I’ve also used it to be club fees, and pay for dorm clothing. Beats having to run to an ATM for cash, since I never carry cash.

Just bring the checkbook. It’s better to have it in case you need it. You don’t have to carry it around with you.
