i plan on majoring chem/bio. if i got a 5 on AP Chem, should i take Chem 1A/1AL? if i don't attend CalSo, will i not be able to get into Chem 1A/1AL?

thank you.

thank you.

You might not get the lab section time you want, but most likely you’ll get into the class anyway. If you see on your department website that it’s ok to opt out of Chem 1A w/ your AP credit, then certainly skip out of it. Although if I remember correctly, if you are planning to major in Chem and eventually move to College of Chemistry, then you have to take Chem 4A and there is no way out of that.

skip out? i just saw a lot of posts that said Chem 1A is really different from AP Chem and that it’s recommended to take it…and now i’m really uncertain of what to do…

thank you for your reply :)

Your intended major? Does it require any additional chemistry courses?

If your intended major allows substitution of AP credit for Chemistry 1A/1AL and does not require any additional chemistry courses (e.g. some engineering majors), then you may as well skip it. If it does require additional chemistry courses, look at the old Chemistry 1A final exams to see if you know all of the material covered in that course. If you are pre-med, be aware that many medical schools do not accept AP credit for pre-med course work; you would have to substitute a more advanced chemistry course if you skip.

You can find old exams for various courses here: https://tbp.berkeley.edu/students/exams/

I took Chem 1A and AP chem. My advice is to take chem 1A, it’s so different and it will give you an idea of what to expect for the science classes. That being said, if you’re not pre-med, I wouldn’t take it fall semester since it is a weeder course.

well, since i’m planning on majoring something related to chem and bio (unsure of exactly what i would like to major in), i assume i will be required to take other chem courses other than Chem 1A/1AL.

so overall, i should take Chem 1A/1AL? and should i take it the very first semester?

thank you so much for all your replies.

Have tried the old Chemistry 1A final exams?

How many hours max per week does Chem 1a/1al require? I know it is different for everyone but I’m trying to get a sense of the workload

@ucbalumnus i looked over it and saw that there are a lot of things i just overlooked in AP Chem. i think i’m going to take Chem 1A. thank you so much for the site.

is it also recommended to take Chem 1AL along with Chem 1A? or just Chem 1A?

Yes, you pretty much have to take 1Al at the same time (not required but you’re going to have to take it eventually, might as well do it while you’re learning the material).

@dina4119 rrright. thank you so much :)

I’m all for making use of AP credits, but in this situation I would recommend taking intro/analytical chem. Specifically, if you are undecided on your major, you should take the Chem 4 series to facilitate an easier transfer down the line. The fact that the material is a little bit more rigorous will also benefit you.

By the way, the labs are the most useful part of either the Chem 1 or 4 series. You will

1) Learn how to write lab reports in an undergraduate setting

2) have the chance to interact with and learn from a graduate student (the 1 series sometimes uses undergrads)

3) work with more sophisticated instrumentation than what you are used to in high school.

4) practice lab technique

And to clarify - you are allowed to sign up for Chem4A as a L&S student. I took the 4 series and the 112 series (organic) before I decided to transfer into the College of Chemistry.

so take 1A/1AL as intro or no?

Chem 4 and Chem 1 are the same thing. Chem 4 is for chemistry majors in the college of chemistry, so the curriculum and labs are slightly more rigorous. Chem 1 is for everyone else in L&S.

Ultimately, it’s on you which one you take, but you will want to take either Chem 1 or Chem 4 rather than skipping.

thank you! i’m still unsure if i need to transfer into the college of chemistry but if i can skip out of Chem 1A/AL with my AP credit, i think i might take Chem 4A just in case i transfer.

thank you! you’re really helpful.

The majors in chemistry (either CoC or L&S), chemical engineering, and chemical biology require 4A-4B. All other majors requiring general chemistry (the various biology majors other than chemical biology and most non-chemical engineering majors) require 1A/1AL and sometimes 1B (though 4A can replace 1A/1AL and 4B can replace 1B).

My daughter is an incoming freshman and is interested in majoring in Integrative Biology or Psychology. We know Psychology is impacted and she has to meet the pre-requesites for for both majors by the end of her second year. My question is how difficult is Chem 1A? (She took non-AP Chemistry in high school, got an A but didnt think the class was all that good.) Given that Psychology is impacted, and probably her first choice as a major, does she take Chem 1A and risk a low grade which could affect her GPA for Psych or take it because if she can’t get into Psych she will need it for Integrative Bio? Are Chem 1A and Math 1A pretty tough classes for a fall freshman who is adjusting to college? And how hard is it to be accepted as a Psychology major?
