So i was looking on the instructors for chem 1a, and it looks like Stacy, Majda, and Boering will be teaching. My question is, will all of them have the same midterms and finals because under the note section, it says that all 3 of them will teach.

Also, how come the first mid-terms is so early in the year (sep.16th)? are the chem 1a midterms hard?

All of them have the same final. Stacy, Majda, Boering trade-off with teaching the class. Stacy taught the 9-10, 11-12 lectures last fall and Majda taught the 1-2 lecture. Boering takes over for several of the units and during some lectures Stacy and Boering will both teach.

It doesn't matter what teacher or lecture you attend, the slides used in all 3 lectures are the same.

Everyone does differently on tests... so it's difficult to say if the midterms will be 'hard'. Generally, the class is passable and scores of 80 (out of 80) on the midterms are common. If you can't survive this class you definitely won't survive Ochem.

to get an A, you just need to do all your work, and make sure you understand everything. a lot of kids will THINK they understand it but then they don't really, and you should try to not be one of them.

to get 100%, you need to study absurdly hard and make sure you know every little thing that they throw at you in and out, no matter how minor it seems.

I'd have to disagree, Stacy and Boering emphasize big, general concepts and ideas and not so much about little details. Spending your time studying and learning how things work conceptually will allow you to do well in the class.

To study I generally reviewed lecture slides, since this is where those big, general concepts come from. The book was a supplement to the slides and helped clarify any confusing about the slides. Don't bother memorizing minute details from the book, it won't help at all. Also, reviewing the old i-clicker quizzes is really helpful since they get you thinking about those concepts. OWL HW problems can also be redone for more practice.

I agree with ethancc2. Stacy really emphasizes the material learned in lecture on the test, nothing that is not in lecture is not on the exam, so some of the reading is kind of useless.

The class is very easy compared to ochem, if you have a solid background in AP, you should be fine.

Chem 1A has three midterms so you have more opportunities to do well- they really "baby" you in this class compared to ochem because they offer OWL homework for points towards your grade, as well as a really easy project, labs, etc. In ochem, the grade is 100 points for each midterm and 200 for the final and that's it.

I didn't take AP Chem and still did well in Chem 1a. So maybe AP Chem could help a bit?

Also keep in mind there's a lot of things that Chem 1a didn't cover that high school does (ie nuclear chemistry and biochemistry).

And don't get cocky with just a 5 on the AP test, I've seen plenty of ppl w/ AP chem background do poorly or not so stellar just b/c they thought they could regurgitate everything from high school.
