We have a week to decide where to enroll our son who is OOS (international) to study Chem Engg and are somewhat confused. According to what we have researched:
Overall university ranking: UF, NC State, UD
Chem Engg ranking and placements: UD, NC State, UF
Quality of college experience: UD and UF then NC State
He has been admitted to Honors in UD but not elsewhere.
Net cost to us is least at NC State and most at UD but the difference is not huge.
Which of these 3 would be most welcoming to an international, vegetarian student?
Which of these would have the least breadth requirements?
Which of these has the best/worst biochemistry dept (in case he decides to switch his major)?
Would appreciate any advice from CC experts.
UD is ranked 9th in Chemical eng and if not mistaken is backed by major chemical corporations which if I remember correctly are based next to campus…
I would expect them all to provide food services to vegetarians and all types of students dietary needs
We looked at UD for Chemical eng (international ourselves) kids weren’t connecting with the campus location. So one is at Michigan state and the other heading to Penn state
I don’t know about the others, but NCSU is very welcoming. Plus it’s near the triangle of Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, which is great for internships. My son is there and loves it.
I am no CC expert but my OOS daughter was deciding between UD and a bunch of other power house engineering schools (U of Illinois, UW Madison, Purdue, and BU). She ended up choosing Delware because of the benefits of the honors college (preferred housing, first pick of classes, and smaller class sizes) as well as the merit aid awarded. She is a biomedical engineering major, but we have heard that UD is one of the top Chemical engineering schools in the country, so that’s a consideration. We did not get a very international feel from the student body when we toured but that was not necessarily a consideration for us. Good luck with your decision!

@SRajaJ I’m curious how you ended up with UD at the top for Quality of College experience, what factors weigh in your assessment? That aside, I think that NC State (being a STEM school) has the best biochem department out of the 3. NC State also has a biomolecular concerntration within their CHEG program that may be of interest. The GEP requirements at NC State are also pretty reasonable but I doubt you’ll find much difference between these 3 schools when it comes to breadth requirements. If you visit niche dot com you’ll notice the #1 things students say best describes the typical NC State student is “Diverse”. I can’t speak to UF but that certainly hasn’t been my experience at UD. I’d rate them NC State/UD/UF but that’s my opinion and there are a lot of factors that come into play from climate to food to housing to athletics depending on what your son feels is important.
NC State is a very racially diverse school and has lots of things to do in Raleigh/RTP. NCSU also has good co-op programs in which kids can work 2 semesters + summer in any order and are typically paid 18$ an hour (or more) + if they want to make sure they have a job. Florida is culturally very different than Raleigh/Durham and I’ve never been to delaware. My kid is in the college of engineering but is ISE major. If you @SRajaJ have a specific question about NCSU feel free to ask.
Honors also depends on what school you are at; At NCSU honors allows undergrads to pre-register for classes before all other undergrads, which means the kids pick the exact teacher and time they want. At UNC honors is basically useless since there’ s no early registration and there are only a couple of classes that are honors sections that work out during the 4 years for STEM majors. So what does honors at Delaware mean?
