ChemE at CMU vs. PetE at one of top PetE schools

Im applying ED at CMU for chemical engineering. This would be considered my reach school. I am also applying to many petroleum engineering schools (penn state, wvu, marietta, ut, tamu, tulsa)

My question is... in terms of a better job after college (meaning highest salary) what should I do? Assuming I get accepted to all schools I mentioned. Not saying I am gonna but theoretically.

In general, I would think PE would do the best assuming you get into a good company.

Can I still be a petroleum engineer with a degree in chemical engineering?

Chemical Engineers can definitely work as Petroleum Engineers.

anyone worried about PetE getting oversaturated?

I dont think PE will be oversaturated as long as gas prices continue to rise. Also, many of the petroleum engineers are going to retire soon from what I’ve heard

It would be interesting to see more information showing the contrary. Just to weigh all the facts. I think a huge upper hand is that there is such a limited amount of colleges that actually offer the degree keeping the supply of PetE’s low but then again those programs are seeing increases every year. Not to mention that there is talk of aero/mech/chem engineers being hired by Petroleum companies but they may just be involved in the downstream work.

Yeah I have heard that if u work as a petro engineer, u get paid based on your degree. For example, petroleum engineers with a degree in PetE would make the most

There is a severe misconception in this thread. Chemical engineering and Petroleum Engineering are very different fields. Its like comparing apples and oranges. For the most part, you can’t work as a Petroleum engineer with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Chemical engineers work for refineries (downstream sector), while Petroleum engineers work at drilling and reservoir (upstream sector). If you want to get into refining oil into plastics, diesel then study chemical, but if you want to work on drilling projects then study Petroleum.

Are all the career prospects the same no matter what PetE college you attend? There is alot of hype about TAMU but how does that really compare to UAF or CSM? Is there equal opportunity as long as you are near the top of your class during graduation?
