ChemE Double Major

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities, the university in which I am currently studying Chemical Engineering, allows me to double major in Chemical Engineering and either Chemistry or Material Science and still graduate in four years.

I am most likely going into graduate school after I graduate with my BS degree. I would like to go into research and development of either biotechnology, alternative energy, or nanotechnology.

Based on these three career paths/interests, would it be more beneficial to have my second major be Chemistry or Material Science.

Any input would be appreciated!

They both have applications in those fields you mentioned. I suppose chemistry is broader, while materials science is more specific. If you're going to pick materials science, you will probably deal with a lot of polymer chemistry. I would personally choose chemistry because of its broadness.

Thanks steevee. Anybody else?

since you're pretty much interested in biotech stuffs, I'd suggest you to go w/ chemistry. Like steevee said its broader, and it'll help you more with bio and energy related research much more than material science will ever do. Mat sci, apart from being narrower, is pretty much a submajor of chem eng since their classes and study materials are almost the same.
