ChemE on a pre-med track?

Are there any other pre-meds out there on an engineering track? I'm on the fence and don't know if I should make the switch from AB to BSE. I really want to do ChemE, but engineering destroys GPAs. While I wanted to do ChemE initially for an alternative in case I don't get into med school, now I think that ChemE will preemptively preclude me from med school. Thoughts?

I should add that if I don't get into med school, there's no other job I can imagine myself doing than being a chemical engineer. If I get an AB in Chemistry instead, I'd have to go back to school for an MS in engineering so why not just get the BSE the first go? There's really nothing to do with an AB in Chemistry except go back to school for a doctorate and do research. I don't envision myself on the bench for the rest of my life.

*I posted this on another forum earlier but it was getting views and no response, so I thought I'd post here.

Do it. Excel while you’re at it. You’ll have the best chance of getting into med school/employment as an engineer if you do well, so just go for it. Engineering only destroys GPAs if you let it, and med school can be a bit of a crapshoot anyways.

That’s what I figure. :)

My son’s chem e /pre-med and he has a great a GPA. If that’s what you want then do it.

Engineering destroys GPA only if you let it.

Thanks for your input!

I am planning on doing bioengineering and then med school. I am similarly worried about a low GPA because of it, but that’s the major I want so I’ll just have to work harder I guess?

Also, there is always the in-state med schools that are significantly less selective. I think so, at least!

My pre-med son is ChemE, and he’s applying to med schools this cycle. He has a 4.0 BCMP and a 3.9 cum.

Lehigh…I wouldn’t say that “instate med schools are significantly less selective.”

You write as though…Well, if I don’t do well, there’s always my instate SOM. Don’t bet on it.

“In-state med schools significantly less selective”= UCLA, UCSF, UNC???

Sure.
