Chemical Engineering Program?

Hi all,

I have been accepted to both UCLA and UCSB.

To those of you (UCLA) who are majoring in chemE or have graduated and have been a chemE major, how is the program? Is it heavily theory based like I hear it is, or is there a lot of lab work and hands-on experiences? How are the research, internship, and job opportunities?

Also, to those who are engineering majors in UCLA, do you find that you have time to integrate into UCLA’s social side, not necessarily with other engineering majors?

I know that UCSB’s chemE program is, ranking wise, better, but deep down I feel like I’d regret not picking UCLA. Although I’m really attracted to the relaxed atmosphere at UCSB and the attention professors give you, I’m also attracted to a more competitive (but NOT cutthroat) atmosphere like at UCLA. Do you feel that UCLA cares about you as an individual, not as a number, like UCSB makes themselves out to be?

tldr; Can’t decide between UCLA and UCSB for engineering. Please help.

Thanks all!

I’ve found UCLA engineering for the most part to not be competitive. Group work is really the only way to get homework done for engineers lol

What is your evidence that UCLA treats you like a number and that UCSB doesn’t, specifically for ChemE?

I only have anecdotal evidence from current or past students.
