Chemical Engineering Prospects?

Hey guys, I applied to Pratt for regular decision, but since I am interested in studying chemical engineering, Duke is not very high on my list. However, I saw that recently Duke added an Environmental Engineering minor, which led me to think that the majors offered by Pratt are subject to change. Can anyone offer any insight as to why Pratt doesn't offer Chemical Engineering, and the likelihood of it becoming a degree program in the coming years?

Not likely to add a ChemE dept any time soon. I think Duke has had the same four engineering depts since 1972. There is some ChemE-like research that goes on in the BME dept though, particularly with professors with that background (such as Gabriel Lopez and Lingchong You’s labs as they both received PhDs in ChemE). But the curriculum is certainly BME. Some study a different discipline in undergrad and go on in grad school in something a bit different, but related. BME to ChemE would be a pretty easy transition. But if you want to become a chemical engineer right after graduation, a ChemE curriculum would probably serve you better all else being equal.

Thanks bluedog. I’m not convinced I want to be a chemical engineer right after graduation, but I definitely want the option available to me as an undergraduate.
