Chemical Engineering

I know it's ranked well and everything, but how goes the actual classes? Are they interactive or just extremely cramped lecture halls? Is the social life really that horrible since the school is so big? Is eng better because it's the St. Paul half? What have your experiences with Chem Eng undergrad department been?

I'm asking this mainly because Twin Cities is a great safety for me (large Merit Finalist Scholarship (that I may get lul), low OOS tuition, pretty far away), but it's size is very daunting, especially since I want the small-school/helpful teachers enviro when I get to the hard stuff.

Thanks all. :]

you can always get help from ta…

i am taking chem1 and it calc 2. they are pretty easy so i haven’t seek any help yet/
but my friend who is taking chem3 told me that his chem class has several workshop(two per week) held by TAs(handout written by prof) has the size of 25. and the workshop is optional but if you don’t attend it you gonna screw up…

o.
make sure get rid of chem1 2 phys1 2 calc1 2 with ap
they suck.

So are soph year classes for Chem Eng relatively small? Like under 30? Cuz I think I can start as a soph, with my APs. ^^

u’ll take O chem 1 and multi-vari. calc. in the fall.
Both should be lectures with more than 200 ppl.
O chem is 246 ppl lecture.

Other courses i cannot say for sure.

I guess MatSci 3001 should be big since that’s required by chemE and MatSci students.

The other course(CHEN 2001) is something I have no idea.

:0 Holy. Crap. That’s amazingly huge (that’s what she said). Is it really impersonal the first two years since classes are so large/if you know no one? Cuz that’d be no fun. And erm. How are the dorms? Just normal public school like?

you can definitely make friends during the discussion section.
for M.V. Calc it’s 15-ppl.
There should be the “workshop” for O chem where you can meet people.

I met several nice ppl in the chem 1 lab and math dis section.

Some people love dorm~~~Some don’t.

Middlebrook is awesome if you have a nice roomie or got a single. The semi-private(public) bathroom is really useful. It’s used by only four people so it’s much cleaner the those in Centennial. The hall is also really new comparing to C hall. Food is way better in Middlebrook than C hall. But the size of a double in M hall is comparable to the size of a single in C hall. These are the two halls I lived/am living in.

The problems about dorm here is that~~~they offer junk food and the price is sky high. And the contract length is a full year. My suggestion is that, if possible, rent some apt off-campus unless you get a single. You don’t wanna have a roommate who have four easy courses keeps cracking your head all day. And submit the housing application early (if you are considering UM seriously, do it now, just 25 bucks).

Oh I forgot that you need to take a freshman writing course, which is pretty small, like 21 or 25.
