Chemistry a dead major?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently a chemical engineering major at a CCC (I was at UC Berkeley for a year, but could not afford tuition among other things) but I've realized that I don't really care to learn about transport processes and that my passion lies in chemistry. However, after searching, I see many people state that chemistry degrees, even M.S. and especially Ph. D. go no where. It seems that the market is over saturated with chemists and that they are not in demand. I see that chemical engineering is in demand, but I dislike many of the engineering classes. It's just not my passion. I was wondering how I could remedy this. Do I just suck it up and do engineering? Add a math minor or major? Would adding an astronomy minor or major help? Thanks so much for everyone's input :)

Math majors have decent job prospects, but apparently mainly in finance and computers.

You may want to look at the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/internships-careers-employment/1121619-university-graduate-career-surveys-4.html</a> .

Hmm I still see that Chemistry isn’t looking so good. I don’t have a strong passion for mathematics, only chemistry and astronomy, but I think adding a math major or minor might end up being more helpful than astronomy. Too bad because those were the two fields I would love to do research in so much. Haha if only research jobs were plentiful and stable.

[edit] maybe i should just suck it up and do a chem engineering major =\ I know I’d hate the upper div classes…

I know someone that’s double majoring in chemical engineering and chemistry. Try that if your school lets you. If you can’t find the job you want in chemistry then you’ll always have that chemical engineering degree.

If you need a comparison what sort of jobs you are looking at coming out of college in chemistry or math this should help:
