<p>The general rules:
If it's ionic and contain transition metal ions, it is mostly brightly coloured or black.
If it is ionic and contain Group 1 or 2 metal ions, it is mostly white.
You just have to memorize the colours of halogens, and other nonmetals.
Know the colours of common ions in solutions: Mn, Fe, Cu, Cr.
Not much else I don't think.</p>
